"This getting up early, he thought, makes you totally stupid. A man needs sleep. Other traveling salesmen live like harem women."(page 8)

This quote is serving a great purpose to display the futility portrayed in Gregor's life, who doesn't see a purpose to live or find joy in anything. He has just been changed into a bug and rather than freaking out about it, he goes on a rant about his job. It is clear that he is almost like a robot that works mechanically, so it makes sense that his life is unmeaningful.
                    -Dalia V

"no matter how forcefully he heaved himself to the right, he rocked onto his back again. He must have tried it a hundred times, closing his eyes so as not to see his twitching legs" (7)

Kafka shows the how futile Gregor feels even when trying to complete such a basic action as rolling over onto his side. This portrays Gregor's frustration at how life does not work out the way he hopes and how that makes him feel helpless and futile. The imagery also adds to really convey this message of futility.
-Grace K.

"At first he wanted to get of the bed with the lower part of his body, but this lower part (which he incidentally had not yet looked at and which he also couldn’t picture clearly) proved itself too difficult to move. The attempt went so slowly." (8)

This quote describes how hard is it for Gregor to continue on with his life. He is being held back and slowed down every time he tries to start something new, even something as easy as getting out of bed for work. The futility Gregor feels is shown every time he is shot down from doing something new.
- Samantha V.

"His numerous legs, pitifully thin in comparison to the rest of his circumference, flickered helplessly before his eyes." (last sentence of first paragraph)

The author uses this quote to represent the recurring idea of futility; that no matter how hard he tries, nothing is going to change. This can be drawn from this quote because Kafka uses diction such as "helplessly" to present an image of Gregor not being able to take control of his life and make something of it. Even when attempting to get up, he cannot. This tells readers that no matter how much effort he puts forth, it will not be effective, leaving him feeling pitiful and irrelevant just as an insect might seem to people.
- Jasmine R.
