One feature to consider that could help keep student data safe is the ability to assign a symbol, letter, or number to a student (instead of their name and/ or student identification numbers). This could allow the teacher to upload student work for review while protecting their privacy.

Before using the tool, be sure it is a district approved application. Even so, anonymize the data by removing any PII like student names and student IDs from the data sets.

It's important to talk about using only approved software and also about the dangers of using AI – in the fact that the information that you feed into it can many times be used to teach the model. Pointing out scenarios that teachers should avoid could help them being caught in a tricky situation.

It's important to look at whether the app calls out data privacy at the forefront. Does it say that it does not use student data to train the AI? Is it not using the data for commercial purposes? Starting by reading the privacy policy is a good step in evaluating whether the app may be usable from a data privacy standpoint.
