This is a building I pass a lot on the way back from Kroger with my roommate. I really like all the old-looking hand-painted typography around Richmond. This building is an apartment building, not a brewery so I'm assuming it's just left over from before it was converted into apartments.
The letters themselves are a little messy and inconsistent. Like with the first word 'home', the letters seem thicker and as a result look more closely spaced. They're all uppercase sans serif without any particularly unique characteristics besides the curving lines on either side of 'brewery'. I do like that they spaced 'brewery' out more so there's at least one interesting feature.

I found this on a building near my dorm, I'm not sure if it's still a beauty salon or if it's used at all anymore.
I like this type specifically because it's very old and has worn off a lot. It looks like it was hand-painted too. The first word, 'Thomas', is all uppercase sans serif and it looks like it was painted to have a 3D effect, but it's all white now so I'm not sure if it used to have another color that washed off or if it was always all-white.
The bottom text is in a script style font which is what I would expect for a beauty salon since script fonts are typically seen as beautiful and sometimes more feminine. The B has a swash and the leg of the N curves upward. The E, A, and U all blend together with how closely they're spaced. I'm assuming it was more legible in the past, but that's one thing that could possibly be improved if they were to redo it.

This is a sticker I found on the side of a building. At first I was only interested in the cat sticker, but then I noticed the typography in the other one.
It uses uppercase sans serif, but only an outline. The letters are pretty curvy with no sharp angles. One of the more interesting features is the E's bottom bar which is elongated and curves down onto the H.
It looks like the text is also distorted a bit, like it's pinched inward slightly which I really like. I don't know if 'nice couch' is a band name or something, but I do think the style fits the meaning, at least for the word couch. It's round, soft, even curved like an old couch might be.

This is a poster for an outdoor concert in Monroe Park posted right outside Johnson. I think they could've chosen a more interesting font, at least for the band names, because I really can't tell if it's one band named 'Wallpaper Raneshounds' or two different bands named 'Wallpaper' and 'Raneshounds'. I do like that they put a photo of Weenie Hut Jr's though.
The font itself is a serif font with thick stems and rounded serifs. I'm also just noticing that they spelled February wrong.
Anyway, I think having everything in the same font all uppercase makes it hard to create visual hierarchy of information. It's still understandable, but it's something I think they could've done better.

Now that I'm posting all the type I've been collecting, I'm noticing that a lot of the hand-painted stuff on buildings is either sans serif or has round serifs. I'm assuming that's because it's more difficult to get perfectly crisp serifs.
I like the font used for the name 'Eagle Mill Lofts'. It's a round serif font that's pretty thick overall. It's got some thin areas like the left leg of the M and at the ends of the serifs of the E's, F, T, and S.

This is the back of the album "Pony" by Orville Peck.
I love how his name is written is a kind of crayon-textured brush (I'm assuming it was done digitally). His music is country, but leans towards pop. This was his first album as Orville so I think the handwritten look fits the vibe well because a lot of the music videos and everything were done by himself and his friends on a small budget. I also love the bright red and use of the star to really tie together all the cowboy imagery.
The word 'pony' is in a typical western style font which represents the album well. It has thick letters and very square wide serifs.
The tracklist is also all handwritten, or it at least looks that way. I really like the variation he has between all the type. His name is the biggest, but the album name is much bolder and the tracklist is much thinner which all helps create a visual hierarchy.

Here's a poster for one of my favorite bands, The Used. It's from like 2004 for their release of their second album "In Love and Death".
The band name is in the same typeface as the one used on the cover of the actual album, the only difference is that the text is red on the poster. I love the handwritten splattered look, it really captures the album well. The band came from a small town in Utah and they were all in their very early 20's when this album came out so it's really DIY and put together mostly by themselves.
The "In Love and Death" text is in a really fancy calligraphy looking font. It really stands out compared to other bands in their scene because their music during this time was kind of a mix of rock, post-hardcore, and punk so this ornate lettering wouldn't be expected. Their music doesn't fit into a specific genre though and so the unexpectedness of that kind of font helps describe the band. The singer Bert loves poetry and that really influenced this album compared to the one before so this fancy typeface also really fits for that reason as well.

This bus was parked on the side of Broad St when my roommate and I were going to get mail. I thought the typography and the overall design was really cool. It reminds me of like a ski resort in the 80s.
The type is very round and thick, I really like how the O is a perfect circle and the counter is so small. The open counters of the U, N, and Y are very thin, I think they're just straight lines. This is repeated in the G, where it has a counter like the O, but combined with the open counter of the other letters.
I think the balance of round and straight lines works really well, especially when looking at the x-height. It's also symmetric in that the word begins with a Y and ends in a G so the descenders act like bookends.

I don't remember where I got this mug, but it's Halloween themed as you can tell. The open and closed counters are all skulls which is a pretty cool idea. It works really well for the O's and S, but I think the K, P, and Y don't look as natural. Maybe that's because the skulls are shrunk or enlarged to fit each letter so it doesn't feel consistent.
The type itself is very basic sans serif. It's hard to describe much about it because the skulls kinda hide the original typeface. The letters are spaced really close together and they all have the same cap height.

I really like sans serif fonts like this, they're very minimal while being highly legible and aesthetically pleasing. It's important that the postal service has very legible wiring considering the mass amounts of people who use their service or work for them.
One aspect that I specifically like from the 'Priority Mail' typeface is the large counters which take up. more space than the legs, which is especially visible in the 'R'. The counter of the O is a perfect circle which represents a level of sophistication.
The type to the left, 'Tracked' and 'Insured', are in a thinner sans serif font which really contrasts the previous one while still complimenting each other.

I love how bold and simple the Posca logo is. It really draws your attention in especially with the colors. The serif-like swash-like marks on the P, S, C, and A are visually like the way a chisel or flat shaped shaped marker would draw. Since these are paint pens, I think it's a very accurate representation. Even the boldness of the letters and of the color represent how paint pens look when used for drawing, writing, etc.
The overlapping of letters and the small stroke separating the letters reminds me a bit of graffiti. I'm not sure if that was a direct influence, but paint pens are popular among graffiti artists so it would make sense to reference that style.

The S at the beginning and end are larger which I really like because it makes it symmetrical.
The 'Supremely Sweet' text and the text below 'Strawberries' are tall thin sans serif fonts like the main one. I don't love the colors, but I still think the typeface is interesting and unique.
The text has a lot of triangles, like in the counters of the B, in the negative space between letters, and in the actual shape of the letters like the O's. I like how the more important letters, specifically the B, T, and H, are not only just larger, but also in caps so that it's easier to read.
The smaller letters are all shaped very similarly in that hexagon shape. I think this also helps a lot with legibility.
Also I just now realized that the bottom side of the word 'Beartooth' is meant to resemble teeth, with the B and H being canines. That probably should've been more evident to me, but I guess I never looked at it long enough.

This is a mystery merch box for the band The Used that I bought even though I already own an excessive amount of their merch. I thought the box was really cool because it's like a mix of a bunch of their designs and logos over the years. The band's been together for around 20 years so they have a lot to pull from.
The 'Heartwork' text at the very top is the name of their most recent album and the aesthetics of it are based roughly on tarot cards. This text doesn't exactly fit that vibe, but they experimented with a lot of new designs with the new album.
Compared to their previous designs, these new ones ('Heartwork' at the top and 'The Used' in the center) are much cleaner and more digital looking. They both have an element of distortion, like the wavy-ness of the center text and the shadows/reflections under the top text. The band's also using more sans serif all caps typefaces.

I got this business card for Lucky 13 when my friends and I went to get piercings after class one day last year.
The top text is really cool, it's got serifs that are a bit curvier and bigger than normal. The dark black shadows and the thick black border help balance the darkness in the illustration.
I think the overall readability is really good because the text size and boldness relates to its importance. One small thing that isn't really related to typography is that I think the website lucky13tattooinc can cause confusion because people may begin to write tattooing in stead of tattooinc.
The bottom text meshes well in my opinion because it's similar enough to the top text, but simpler and thinner. It's also more round than the top text in that the O's are perfect circles whereas the O's at the top are ovals.

This is the back of the packaging for an Easter PEZ dispenser my mom sent me.
On one hand I really like it because it feels a bit outdated. While there's problems with this logo design, I like that it's much more unique and visually interesting than a lot of the simpler current designs. It also reminds me a bit of Tetris which I would play on my dad's old Gameboy so I like the nostalgia.
However, there's also a lot of ways this could be redone and simplified while still lookin good and keeping the brand identity. Maybe the PEZ pieces could be bigger or the letters themselves could allude to the rectangular shapes in a way other than being physically made of them. The Z in particular feels a bit hard to read, although I think enough people know about the candy for this to not be an issue. Maybe the P can keep the pinwheel-type effect, but the small lines on all the letters could be erased.

My roommates and I ordered pizza last night and I thought the box was really cool. I'm doing a psychedelic style poster in my design class right now and the type on this box is kind of in that style.
The text looks hand drawn and it's very organic and thick. It curves and varies in shape which give it the psychedelic look. The contrasting yellow and green also add to that.
I think the type of font they used represents pizza pretty well, especially with the word 'stuffed' because they like inverted it so that the word is the stuffing in the yellow crust they drew.

This is a box of India Ink. I think the Speedball logo does a good job of representing what their brand's about. It's got a swash-type thing on the b and just generally looks like it was written with a fountain pen. This also helps make it look trustworthy and professional too.
One thing that bothers me about the box is that in the words 'India Ink', the second I in India doesn't have a dot, it's like a capital I and it just feels a little weird to me. I think what makes it feel out of place is the fact that there are normal lowercase i's in the words below it.
Overall though I think these fonts go well together and paired with that ornate-looking ink drawing at the bottom it really makes the company seem high quality.

This is my glue stick, I wanted to put it in my type journal because I think the typography is kinda bad.
It doesn't have any unique characteristics really. It's just a bold black sans serif font. I guess the fact that the letters are bold could represent like lines of glue in a way, but it doesn't really work either way.
I know the design needs to be simple to fit on this small glue stick, but it just feels bland. It is just a glue stick so maybe there's not much personality to add, but I think it could be cool if a more playful font was used since kids are normally the main users of glue sticks. I would probably choose a more rounded font compared to the one used.

This is a shirt I have for the movie Paranorman.
I really like how the typeface essentially shows you what shapes and aesthetics are used in the movie. For example, the letters are kind of thick and tall. The counters especially emphasize this since they're long and narrow. This is reflected in the character design of the main character Norman. He's very skinny, but has a wide head with spiky hair. Even his hair has informed the design of the letters like with the bars of the A's which are spiky at one end or with the tops of the P and N's which are wider and fade off.
The typeface is also very reminiscent of ones used for Frankenstein-related content like movies and posters, which makes sense because they involve similar subject matter and themes.

The G is instantly recognizable which I think is a really cool feature of the logo. The serifs are all pretty large and are angled upwards, giving it a more bumpy look. The counters are thin and lumpy, which adds to the gooey look.
The letters are all spaced very close together, which makes it look

The counter in the o is a perfect circle which is interesting. I'm not sure exactly what it represents but I do get a candy vibe from it. I especially like the typefaces used below that one in the words 'Sour Brite' anf 'Crawlers'. The Crawler one is the most physically similar to the actual gummy worms. It's got round serifs and thin stems. Each letter has the same uniform thickness, but the letters are arranged in a kind of staggered way.
Overall I like the type choices a lot and the packaging makes me want to buy it.

I'm mostly just keeping it because of how cool the can looks.
The word 'Monster' is in a really cool font that uses serifs and all caps. The O has an interesting counter that's more like a closed U shape. I like how the serifs are tilted at an angle. I also like how the O and the S are a bit bigger and more complex than the others. Th O has a line going through it and the S is done in the way you'd carve the number 5 into wood. I think these thigns add to the kind of evbil look Monster's trying to convey.
