Collaboration, creative thinking, team work are all important..unfortunately often we work side byside teachers that don't want to change their way to teach. I think every teachers should be formed and partecipating, because what we can create in our class can be something more and more interesting and useful if work in team and communication are focused teachers points. And especially pupils have to breath this collaboration and communication in primis inter docentes so they can put into practise every day in their class when they have to solve problems or work in team.

I think that motivation is the key word to base our teaching method! The second is working together, in a sort of peer learning and teaching activity ,where together we set rules, and the team is the strategy to be applied, because everybody is necessary! Because this activity cannot be done alone!! And when you see they find difficulties, it's advisable not to impose, but share the problem by putting hypothesis!!! finally communication is another keyword that must be learned!!! ,By working together students learn to communicate correctly in order to work together!!! And solve the problem when they have it. Finally it's always important to challenge what students have done and how they would have done it in a different way!!1 ,put the ladder a little bit higher than the students usually do it.

I have always considered that you can do collaborative work only within a group of participants, whether each of them take part in it or not. Professor Griffin states that in a collaborative work group each of the people involved need to participate and to take everybody's perspective into consideration, in order to shape his or her personal contribution. Which is quite enriching and empowering, in terms of critical thinking, problem solving and other important skills so much focused in this approach. I appreciate this and I would like to find ways to put it into practice.

At first it will be messy, than you have to adjust each day a little bit...it would take time...you will have to fight against yourself not to do what you were used to...until it's a routine and student's just do it and you are only the maestro at a lovely orchestra.
Is easier when you work this way in several subjects because you may notice the evolution sooner but...don't give up.

It is very interesting this approach: All of us should change our way of thinking and our teaching practice.in a global world everybody schould collaborate and give an active contribution to solve the problems. So it is better that our students learn as soon as possible to be collaborative, critical thinkers in recognising and analysing problems ,posing specific questions avoiding generalisations. With the PBL approach they must actively contribute, because they are obliged, because everyone has got a specific role, they must look at the problem from a different perspective. Only if all communicate and participate actively, respecting all the rules, they can solve the problem or find the best possible solution. The teacher's role is to take the critical thinking at higher levels in order to improve students' performanc

Secondly it underlines the importance of the three Cs in working together towards a common goal: collaboration, critical thinking and communicative skills. Then it states that everybody must contribute to problem analysis and testing hypotheses. Finally, last but not least, when we collaborate we have to use four things: what we do other people can see – what we say other people can hear – what we write other people can read – what we produce other people can use.

This kind of assessment is directly involved with individualised approach to student. Teacher must know a lot about student to help him or her to how much his her progression can go. I wonder if in other countries initial education includes the ways of formative assessment.

Impossible because time is not enough to allow the implementation of so demanding tasks in public Greek schools. It all reminds me of University assignments which are quite challenging but I doubt whether we can work on such a high level in secondary education for ex.. It seems to be the ideal educational tool but it's hard to implement. I strongly feel, though, that the principles on which the collaborative problem solving is based are worth careful evaluation especially by teachers who, like me, work in educational environments not friendly to this innovative way of teaching.

I believe the framework of collaborative task is effective to transport the competences mentioned in the video. I, however, consider it an effort of also early education to prepare children/students for these environments. I, mean, they have to have strategies to interact, to solve problems, to communicate effectively, to join the discussion and so on. I experience numerous instances where emotional factors determine the participation in a certain group. People are shy, others are stronger, louder and so on. Thus I believe it is quintessential to lay the foundation for effective collaborative work early and strengthen the students' confidence. This, yet, for me is an approach that is often neglected in discussions. We want them to work together, but do we prepare them properly?

I appreciate a lot when you suggest challenges for the students.

I find Professor Griffin’s overview on collaborative problem solving tasks quite inspiring. I think the advantages of exploiting a collaborative problem solving work in class is that it involves the use of social skills, such as cooperation, communication, negotiation with more cognitive skills such as problem solving and critical thinking. The disadvantages are that pupils’ active participation (they must interact! They must cooperate! ) is necessary and this does not always happen! :(

Always possibilities to perform in school sciene have more active students (about 20%). A lot of students for many years did not participate in school life. It is horrible.

Collaborative problem solving is a complex skill requiring both social and cognitive competencies. It was rationalised by the ATC 21S project team as a composite skill arising from the links between critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and collaboration. The term “collaborative Problem Solving” was adopted from the work of O’Neill (2014) and from counselling in the work of Green (2004). Hesse et al (2015) conceptualised collaborative problem solving as consisting of five broad strands - participation, perspective taking, social and task regulation, and knowledge building and we will return to these in detail.

At last I understood the difference between group work and collaboration with the help of the video. In group work there might be "passive" members, while in a real collaborative task ALL members have to contribute to the work actively with teacher's guidance. This needs a lot of preparation and planning from the teacher, who actually becomes only an assistant during the learning process. This is the most difficult to change in our educational system: the dominant role of the teacher. Actually we have been trained to be in the centre of attention. But now with today's kids this teacher-centerness does not work, urgent changes are needed!

This approach deals also with scientific method, involving problems, hypothesis and experimentation. Maybe it will be more difficult to implement in literature or language classes or projects. There’s no doubt collaborative paradigm will rise in a near future and will require big efforts from teachers and stake holders. As see it now, I don´t feel confident to do it right away, I don’t feel prepared to that task. On the other hand, I feel I must start facing this challenge in short term. Generally in Portugal, we have discipline problems and I wonder if we can balance this approach with discipline management.

Indeed, we practice work group but not what is clearly explained here collaborative work. I think we should improve the formative path to assess the contribution of each member. It is probably one of the main difficulty because students are not at the same level of thinking, they don't use the different tools . The diversity is a challenge in the collaborative problem solving teaching.

I agree with Rossella, it is very difficult in the Italian schools to apply this model, also because of the resistance of some colleagues or principals to innovate, to come into play by innovate oneself and studying. But this difficult is only apparent, because however you can gradually introduce methods to improve and develope collaborative problem solving skills within a project based learning environment and then show the results by showing your real and concrete product. You work in your classroom – or outside the school, non in a abstract system. I think that the first step is the communication with and to the students; we have to make them aware of what they have to do, in a “we-perspective”, and for me “we” means the teacher and the students, not the teacher and the system, the burocracy, and so on. I am experimenting this in a project based learning in a class, using an “external model”: a simulation of an editorial staff to “solve” the “problem” of creating a tv journaistic report during 4 minutes to send to a national contest, about a topic (the culture of anti-mafia and the legality). Building a product to participate to a contest could represent, in fact, the problem to solve. So I am copying roles, tecnhnique, ways of working and thinking and writing, organization and so on, from that model of working, to aply it in my context. If you insert in the project different kinds of product (a journalistic report, an event with a meeting with an important person, an interview, a slogan and so on), you have the task for the groups and a variegate skills you can develope.

My favourite main points of video are :
1. Competence encompasses the quality and transferability of that action over time and context. No one performs a skill at the same level every time. No one operates at their maximum all the time. We adjust our performance according to the demands at the time. Competence therefore can be regarded as the ability of the person to adjust the skill performance to the demands of the context.
2.\Ways of thinking were conceptualised to include creativity and innovation, critical
thinking, problem-solving, and learning to learn and the development of metacognition. Ways of working was conceptualised to include communication, collaboration and teamwork; Tools for working involved information and ICT literacy; Living in the world involved changing emphases on local and global citizenship, aspects of life and career development, and personal and social responsibility. These were all grouped under the acronym KSAVE: knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and ethics.
3. the beginning of UNESCO's 21st century competence learning discourse -with learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together -forming the four pillars of learning. These four pillars are more complex than appears and shift the discussion somewhat to a philosophical level.
4. Learning to live together is the pillar UNESCO emphasizes more than any other. It refers to developing an understanding of others as well as highlighting the reality that if we are to understand others, we must first know ourselves. Learning to be is founded on the undamental principle that education needs to contribute to the all-round development of each individual. This pillar deals with what it is to be human, comprehended by intellectual, moral, cultural and physical dimensions.
5. Each of the approaches to understanding of 21st century skills and how they fit with
our notions of education and the function it serves, emphasises skills that diverge
from modern traditional notions of academic disciplines. They all actually identify
enabling skills - skills that we need to navigate our global society. They converge on
a common set of 21st century competences - collaboration, communication, ICT literacy, and social and/or cultural competencies; and most include creativity, critical thinking, productivity, and problem-solving.

How we can help?
Cognitive skills are important too, but not with regular, individualized tasks.
CHALLENGE YOUR STUDENTS!
Next video is and amazing experience started a few years ago in Catalonia.

i
In scaffolding student learning in collaborative problem solving We, at least in part, have to change our teaching practice:
The challenge is in fact to identify students’ emerging skills and provide the right support at the right time at the right level.
The assessment practices have to adjust and move from summative information towards formative assessment.
analysis of information and the formulation of hypotheses that they jointly set out to test.
technology-based teaching/learning.
With technology there is a range of ways in which the students can collaborate. This can be across different countries, classrooms and it does not matter if there physically separated by times, location, page, opportunity or subject knowledge. What is required is that the students can simultaneously access the tasks and interact with one another via the Internet to explore potential procedures and strategies that would help them solve a complex problem.
