South Carolina was the first ever state to secede from the Union. After, many other states joined them, formed together, and created the Confederacy. South Carolina also was the first state to have fired in the Civil War.

Battle of Fort Sumter.

Fort Sumter, the battle that marked the official beginning of the Civil War was located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The Confederacy wanted the Union to surrender the Federal military installations in the "Independent republic of South Carolina." Of course, the Union refused, making the Confederacy angry. They fired cannons at Fort Sumter. There was a estimated 0 casualties on both Union and Confederacy. In the end, with scarce supplies and outnumbered troops, the Union surrendered, leading to a Confederacy victory.

South Carolina was affected greatly during the Civil War. They had lost a estimate of around 13,000 men. They had the highest percentage of any state in the whole nation. Just like the other states in the Confederacy, they also had financial problems, and food shortages.

Lieutenant General Wade Hampton III.

Hampton took part in many of the conflict's major battles as a commander of a larger cavalry units. He was raised on a wealthy plantation-owning family, along with a strong military background. He financed and mixed force known as Hampton's Legion during the outbreak of the war.

Federal forces under the command of Benham landed at Grimball’s Landing on James Island and were pushing away Confederate forces in the area. However, a couple days later, Confederates tried to drive the Federals from their positions. After this, both sides prepared for upcoming offensive. Union leader, Henry W. Benham, with his army went to Fort Lamar, where he would attack the Confederacy garrison. There was 889 estimated casualties, 685 Union casualties, but only 204 Confederacy casualties. But after a long battle, Benham, unable to take Fort Lamar, decided to withdraw from the field and retreat back to James Island. This lead to a Confederacy victory.

Lieutenant General Stephen D. Lee.

Stephen D. Lee was the youngest Confederate lieutenant general. He became the commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veteran. Lee was a West Point cadet and career solider who resigned from the U.S Army in 1861. He saw action in the Eastern Theater, initially in command of artillery and then infantry units. He then transferred to the Western Theater and too charge of the Department of Alabama and East Louisiana in July 1864. A statue of the general, Stephen D. Lee stands at Vicksburg.
