I agree with the claim that income is weakly correlated to happiness. I thought it was very interesting to think about, and true, that when there was a positive correlation between income and happiness, it was mostly in those with a lower socioeconomic status. Therefore, when individuals who are poor obtain more money, their happiness does increase because they are able to afford better opportunities, such as clean water.

This is because I have personally met many people who make $150,000+ each year and are able to be retired at the age of 25 or 30. Observation taught me that it was perfectly okay to go get coffee or use the vending machines in the breakroom during working hours. Watching others also taught me that it was okay to answer a text during working hours if you were quick about it and did not do it too often. I think the main reason for working is to earn money. If you can find something you enjoy, even better. But the reality is most people aren’t super thrilled with their day job. They do it to earn money and provide a living for themselves and/or their family. I think the purpose of life is just to enjoy your time here. I feel like my two views definitely clash a little bit. I wish we didn’t have to work and we could just live our lives freely but unfortunately, that’s not how our society works.

I think she was trying to make a point that the advancements did not make us happier and I agree with this. I think that these things have just become basic needs and so we are used to them and technology is also advancing so fast that we are not phased by much anymore. I think she should have also mentioned the time period as a factor, though. In the 1940s, people were happy to just have their loved ones come home from war safe and to be working at the same place for their entire career in the same place they were born. Today, there are so many more opportunities out there for career and life and it puts a kind of pressure on people to be successful at their careers or to be the best at something else.
