There was a section on accepting feedback and having a growth mindset. I definitely want to grow and be better in what I do but I tend to be a bit sensitive and so reading more about that helps to prepare me for receiving feedback and knowing that I can do what I want with the feedback but it can either help or hurt me. I hold onto mistakes that I make and in the workplace, I will try to now use those to help me grow rather than hold me back.

There were many useful tips that were provided, many that I have heard of before, but some that I have never considered. In addition, one question that I have after reading through the blog is in regards to the idea of creating opportunities for yourself. The blog mentioned that you should never wait around to be told what to do, instead you should take the initiative. When you are first beginning your internship, I feel as though this can be intimidating because you are still learning the expectations and protocols. How should new interns seek out or create work/opportunities for their own professional and/or personal gain?

One of the questions they recommended asking was, "Do they prefer email or for you to stop by for quick questions?" I think this is a very important question to ask because some supervisors can get very annoyed with spamming them emails.

Even if I make mistakes, it doesn’t matter because I will learn from them and everything happens for a reason. My work view is being very serious and dedicating all of my time, even my free time, into the workplace. There is only some time to have fun and I feel as if I can’t make mistakes. These both clash because my work life is very much more serious than my life view and that may be a problem. I want to have fun at the same time for both of them, but it’s hard balancing both.

I believe the professor states that she doesn’t believe that having a lot of money will make it happy, which I think is the complete opposite. Money does make people happy now a days and yeah we all realize that back in the 60’s money didn’t matter to people because it was during a different time than now. I didn’t like how she basically asked that question to the audience because that question was very obvious. Disagree overall.

This is because I have personally met many people who make $150,000+ each year and are able to be retired at the age of 25 or 30. They have an incredible amount of personal freedom in their lives, and they live absolutely incredible and fulfilling lives while being financially free. I believe this claim would only apply to people that have to work typical jobs and do not build their own business to the level of financial and personal freedom.

Observation taught me that it was perfectly okay to go get coffee or use the vending machines in the breakroom during working hours. Watching others also taught me that it was okay to answer a text during working hours if you were quick about it and did not do it too often. Honestly, I think the best message in the blog post is simply to observe what is acceptable at a new job and what is not because there are many activities that are not covered in a handbook.

I see that other classmates disagree with that and I understand where they are coming from but I believe that joy and happiness in life is a choice and not a product of the way you live or what you have. I believe you have to wake up daily and chose joy for your life. This means that no matter the situation you are in, that you can try to find joy within in.

This is my planner.. yes, my classes are indeed color coated. I think this says all it needs to say about my schedule autonomy. I am a very busy person, so being able to have flexibility in the things I do is really important to me. I was surprised about the benefits being at a top value for me, I do think money is important, but if you love what you do, then I don't see that it's important. So, I honestly don't have much of an explanation for that one.

I have thought that from such a young age. My dad always tried to discourage me from going into psychology because he was convinced I wouldn't make any money. My response to that always has been and always will be, I would rather make less money doing something I love than making more to do something I hate. If I spend every day doing something I don't love, I would ultimately be miserable. I love that point and I will always stick by it.

One point I agree with would be that more money does not lead to more happiness. I think there are so many people who are making a lot of money that are not necessarily happy. You can wake up everyday and either hate what you do and dread going, but still make a lot of money. I do not know if I would want to hate what I do, just to know I am making more than someone who is in a lower paying job but could be happy and love going.

But the reality is most people aren’t super thrilled with their day job. They do it to earn money and provide a living for themselves and/or their family. I think the purpose of life is just to enjoy your time here. I feel like my two views definitely clash a little bit. I wish we didn’t have to work and we could just live our lives freely but unfortunately, that’s not how our society works.

I agree with the professor’s interest in the flip of percentages of people that think being financially well off is important vs. developing a meaningful philosophy in life. Today, most people think being financially well off is very important whereas in 1967, not many people thought that was important. This is frustrating, because I think it is harder to become financially well off today than it was in 1967. The cost of living keeps going up at a faster rate the average wage, so it’s very difficult to keep up.

I think the work rules and expectations section was filled with great advice. I am a big fan of taking notes and have actually given people the same advice while training them. I also think it great advice to get the other expectations clarified such as dress code, cell phones, and the work hour policies. That way it eliminates any potential confusion about what is expected during your work week. The section on work hours and break policies is important because you want to make sure you understand the expectations of how you should be spending your time on the clock. Communication etiquette is also a huge one. I especially like clarifying if they would prefer an email, a phone call or stopping by to answer quick questions. It is also really important to understand how your team likes to communicate so you don't unintentionally offend someone.

I think that working in general is a means to make money and support yourself. I want my work to allow me to have life I want to have. Within that I want what I do to have a positive impact on both myself and society, provide opportunities for personal and professional growth. When it comes to my life view, I am still figuring out a lot of those questions but I like to think that the purpose of life is to find happiness, develop meaningful relationships and have a positive influence on those around you.

I think as a society people equate higher incomes with success and higher quality of life. People think that a higher income means less problems with life so you're happier. That is why it makes sense to me that people would place themselves higher on the ladder because they equate life satisfaction with professional success.
My work view is that work should contribute to society in a positive manner and should be satisfying in some way, whether through economical means or otherwise. My lifeview is that life is for living to the fullest and seeking out adventure. Obviously, these clash in many ways and I foresee my work view overtaking my life view, as it already has been doing so. I assume my commitment to my work view will help push me to experience new and amazing things like my life view says to do and I hope I get better at focusing on my life view in the future.

In the past, the office has generally introduced themselves to me when during my first few days and from there it would take me a few tries to remember everyone's names. In the past, these jobs have been administrative which this seems essential for but also shift based which made it harder to meet everyone at work. I feel like if I had thought of introducing myself or chatting with people in the office more during my first few days, I would have remembered names faster and known the general preferences of people in the office of correspondence, conflicts, etc.

A point the professor brought up was the study of how the happiness in 2005 compared to the 1940s is lower even though we have much more advanced technologies such as indoor plumbing. I think she was trying to make a point that the advancements did not make us happier and I agree with this. I think that these things have just become basic needs and so we are used to them and technology is also advancing so fast that we are not phased by much anymore. I think she should have also mentioned the time period as a factor, though. In the 1940s, people were happy to just have their loved ones come home from war safe and to be working at the same place for their entire career in the same place they were born. Today, there are so many more opportunities out there for career and life and it puts a kind of pressure on people to be successful at their careers or to be the best at something else. It can be overwhelming and the freedom should be treasured since it is not available to everyone, but this can cause stress and anxiety, leading to a lower happiness level.

After reading the blog, I was really interested in the part about accepting feedback and a growth mindset because I am someone who sometimes has an issue with receiving feedback and I like that they gave examples of questions to ask yourself about the feedback you are receiving and the way that you are taking it could be a result of a few different factors and so I found the points they made and the questions they provided very helpful

I agree with the idea that having a higher income won't lead to more happiness. I think it's something we have all heard but is still very easy for people to forget. I think there are a lot of people who could be in a job that they hated and be okay with that solely because they are making a lot of money with it, but I am not one of those people and I think that a lot of people are under the impression that money will make them happy but it seems like that feeling never ends and people will always want more so you won't truly be happy until you are pursuing things that you are passionate about and putting value on things like relationships and non-material items.
