1. Choose a line(s) from either page 6, 35, or 49 that contains a poetic device (imagery, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, onomatopoeia) that stands out to you for any reason. Record /type the line(s) in AWE.

2. Then, underneath the line(s) in AWE, evaluate the line(s) you have chosen. What does this line(s) add to the poem/scene AND to the story overall?

1."The hard slap of Father's words bring tears to my eyes, where the names of kith and kin swim to the surface" (Grimes 49). Personification
2. This adds to the poem because it seems important to know how he's feeling about his father and what he is saying to hurt his feelings.

1. "I wadded up all my anger and spat"(Grimes 34).
2. This line of imagery adds emotion to the poem. I can really understand how he must be feeling by him saying he was angry but also how he said what he was going to say, he spat the words. This line helps me see how he is feeling. These lines also add character to the story overall. What I mean is it makes the poem more interesting because we know that Ishmael is not scared to express his feelings.
