Using mini white boards, as a formative assessment, is a good way for teachers to assess students understanding of the lesson quickly. Students will be given mini whiteboards and expo markers, that are kept in black socks (for wiping boards) and asked a variety of questions. Students will be required to jot their answer down and raise their boards, after proper wait time, to show the teacher their response. Based off of the students responses, the teacher can adjust her lesson as necessary.

During carpet time, students will be seated in their carpet spot, next to their partner. As the teacher is giving the lesson, she will stop periodically to ask the students a question. Instead of having the students raise their hands to give their response aloud, the teacher will have them think about their response (30 sec-1min), and then turn to their partners and share their thoughts. This formal assessment is a great way to make sure everyone is being included in discussions, allowing the teacher to walk around and listen in on their responses.

Prior to the lesson students will be given a sticky note to put aside. As the lesson goes on students can use this sticky note to record any thing they don't understand. At the end of the lesson, the student will be given a math problem, multiple choice problem, or a short response question. Using the same sticky, they will record their answer and then place it on the designated sticky chart for the teacher to review later.
