In middle and late childhood, the capacity of working memory expands. Research indicates that enhanced processing speed and the ability to inhibit irrelevant information play crucial roles in this efficiency and understanding
(de Ribaupierre, 2002).
Changes in the myelination and synaptic pruning in the cortex likely underlie these improvements in processing information speed and their selective attention.
The working memories is the ability to temporarily hold and manipulate information for cognitive tasks in everyday life.

Holds information for few seconds and is temporary

Can only be heard five to seven items at a time, has a small capacity.

Holds and manipulates information

Depends on control of attention and mental effort

During middle childhood, there’s a notable enhancement in the ability to inhibit irrelevant information, with a marked improvement in selective attention observed from the ages six into adolescence (Vakil, Blachstein, Sheinman, & Greenstein, 2009).
Additionally, children progress their capacity to shift attention between tasks or task features (Carlson, Zelazo, & Faja, 2013). Younger children may struggle with switching between sorting rules, while older children demonstrate greater flexibility in intentional skills, indicating advancements in attention and working memory.
These developments contribute to children adopting more strategic approaches to complex tasks.
