How we should teach about families in schools

The video shows how families come in all different shapes and sizes. I think that the best way to teach students about family is to show them all the different types of families there are in the world. I also think that by teaching students that having people who love and support you is what makes them family. I would teach students that no matter what your family or others is made up of it is alright. Families are not all the same and that is fine. I would teach them to respect other even though they are different doesn't make them wrong or right, there is not a perfect mix of people or genders for it to be a family.

Teaching student's about family can be quite challenging. We want students to be aware that families come in many forms but we also do not want to single anyone out or embarrass anyone. So we as teachers need to make sure that we show students all the different types of families without divulging anyones privacy. We also need to ensure that we make sure students know that teasing or putting down others based on their family being different is now allowed and there are serious consequences. Also we need to make sure that we do not just do Mother and Father gifts because many students are raised by different people. These readings want teachers to make sure that they acknowledge all the unique families in our world and become aware of how to approach these topics by using phrases such as parents, guardians, family, and friends so we do not exclude anyone.

Dear Primo A Letter to My Cousin By: Duncan Tonatiuh

In this book the author is portraying how a family can live far away from each other but still stay in contact, letters. The author was trying to show students that families are similar and different depending on where they live. Families are made up of more than just parents/guardians and siblings, but also cousins are really important too. I would add this book to my library in my classroom because it represents how people live in Mexico and also in the big city. This can help students see how others live in different countries.
