However, he does trigger the book going in the direction it does by selling Pari to the Wahdatis. Saber's life slightly mirrors the fictional character, Baba Ayub's life (Baba had to give up his youngest child, yet Saboor did not go back for Pari like Baba did for Qais)

Pari is taken away from her family and sold to the Wadahti's at a young age. Masooma was always more well behaved or more beautiful than Parwana. She always admired Saboor from afar and hoped to become his wife but Masooma got in the way. Overcome by jealousy and hurt, Parwana pushes her sister out of a tree, disabling her for the rest of her life. She now has to take care of her sister day in and day out

Parwana has always been under her sister since she wasn't as beautiful or well trained as Masooma.

Masooma is Parwana's sister and Nabi's brother. As children and young adults, Masooma was always sought after by everyone which made her sister Parwana jealous and depressed. Sometimes Masooma disliked the attention her beauty brought her but Parwana knew that this was an untruth. Despite being disabled, Masooma is fascinated by her brother's life in Kabul and wishes to go as well. Both sisters take a journey to Kabul but while they're in the desert, Masooma tells Parwana to let the camel she's on run off and to let her die. She does this to free Parwana from being in her shadow. Reluctantly, Parwana agrees and Masooma rides into the darkness of the desert.

Masooma has the upper hand on her sister Parwana in terms of her beauty and admirability. She uses her beauty to her advantage. She knows that people have always liked her more than Parwana and acknowledges how this affects their relationship. This, along with the fact she feels as though she is a burden on Parwana, is why she tells her to let her go off into the night.

Nila's life seems to be very enigmatic as she tries to cope with the fact that she doesn't fit within either culture she's been born into, along with her progressive thinking making her stand out as a woman in Kabul. She adopts Pari because she thinks becoming a mother will fill the void in her in which she doesn't fit in with the rest of society. Later in her life she becomes an accomplished poet, yet seeing Pari excel in places she hadn't makes her bitter towards her daughter and leads to her suicide.

In her relationship with Suleiman, she tends to be outgoing, much to the chagrin of people looking on their marriage. Because of the problems in their relationship, Nila ends up cheating on Suleiman. In terms of her relationship with Pari, she tends to raise her through the problems and stressors in her life in the hopes that she'll turn out exactly the same. The dynamics change however since Pari thrives, leading Nila to feel like a failure and lonely.

He is married to Nila and is Pari's adoptive father, but he is not very close to them. At some point Suleiman suffers a stroke and is left bedridden with only Nabi caring for him. It turns out Suleiman has had feelings for Nabi which is why he was so distant from Nila. Suleiman ends up dying and he leaves his entire mansion to Nabi

Suleiman is passive about his relationship with Nila, and doesn't go out of his way to fix anything within it. He doesn't interject much of his power into the relationship, he just lets it be since he only married Nila out of necessity and saving face. He does have power over Nabi in terms of position but because he loves him, he gives him more leeway than the other people who work for him.

He has a complicated relationship with his employers, the Wahdatis.
