Carson's style of typographic experimentation influenced the development of the deconstruction style of design and a whole new generation of designers. The experiments by Carson and other Ray Gun designers were chaotic, abstract and distinctive, but sometimes illegible. (http://www.designishistory.com/1980/ray-gun/)

The Bjork Cover experiments with typography, bold image and layout. This style was intent on moving away from the clean, structured, legible and rational design ideas of modernist design. It shows the slightly deteriorating type much used in Carsons work, with no formal grid layout, the 'o' is in-line with Bjorks chin. He challenges the reader to interpret the text in their own way.

I like this magazine as it uses colourful, abstract and surreal photography, sometimes even including collage. The tone of voice is very fun and vibrant, this is something I want to portray on my own spreads.

“Every issue starts with a theme, always something basic and general, like love or greed,” Cattelan explained. “Then, as we start, we move like a painter on a canvas, layering and building up the issue. We always find ourselves in a place we didn’t expect to be. The best images are the result of improvisation.” Many images are rejected, he said, because they’re “not Toilet Paper enough.” What makes a Toilet Paper photo? “We keep homing in on what a Toilet Paper image is. Like distilling a perfume. It’s not about one particular style or time frame; what makes them Toilet Paper is a special twist. An uncanny ambiguity.” Maria Lokke

I started off with my three ideas and chose ‘What the Fungi?’, this was going to be about the health benefits of Mushrooms as well as the effect of Psilocybin mushrooms (Magic). I started research into magazines and looked at collage artists, as collage is my main piece of imagery for my spread, this was helpful to look at how different artists would could compose their collage and what materials they would use. I took some old magazines and found some strange photographs in a vintage Vogue which I though fit perfectly into the colourful and quirky tone of voice I was going for. I then found pictures of Mushrooms in a collage book and played with their compositions, I like they way they were larger than the people seen in the photographs, which played into the idea of psychedelic imagery. To capture this even more I used a scanner to distort the pictures and used these for my impact spread, after experimenting with different typography and placements I made the collage the main visual and used colour from the image for my typography. I didn’t want to develop this further because I didn’t want anything to outshine the collage I created. When I created my Information spread I used more distorted collage to create background and placed my article, I’m not 100 percent happy with its outcome. For the next project I’m going to work on my layout and experiment with different styles and placements.
