This poet uses very strong and descriptive imagery as it lets the reader know what he is experiencing and where he is at. The poem starts off with a boy and has just woken up and goes outside of his tent to see what has happened. The poet uses words such as "cool" and "fresh" to say that he's been inside the tent for a while and is now going outside. The boy spots a gray blanket that is covering what seems to be two bodies. There is an old man with "sunken eyes" and looking "gaunt". The boy also spots another person but is instead a young man and gets reminded of the sins of war. - Jaden Vu

There are a couple symbols in this poem that help grasp the scene and imagination of the boy more. For example, the poet mentions a "gray and heavy blanket" that covers of what seems to be two bodies, and that blanket could symbolize peace and ending as the end of someone's life can put someone's misery at an end. There is also another example where when the boy lifts the blanket up and finds an old man and a young man laying flatly on the ground dead after the result of war. The boy describes the young man as "the face of Christ himself" which can represent the sins of the war and the result of that. - Jaden Vu

The images the poet uses are describing the scenes of the Civil War with the dead bodies and blankets the author mentions. The images relate to one another since they are referring to events in the Civil War, where so much death occurred. Walt Whitman describes seeing bodies "on stretchers lying, brought out there untended lying...Over each the blanket spread, ample brownish woolen blanket...Gray and heavy blanket, folding covering them all" which indicates that Whitman was describing what he saw when he was helping the injured soldiers or other civilians. The theme of Whitman's poem when he was describing what happened is that in wars, there are people who will commit sins since that war requires you to take someone else's life. The idea of the poem is connected to Whitman's life is that first, he writes about what he experienced during the Civil War with the description of soldiers dying. Since Whitman was named as the "Bard of Democracy", he wanted to make sure that everyone had rights, including slaves and women during that time. He also stated that America can achieve brotherhood, in which so that no one gets killed in wars just because of their different political and life values. Just like in the poem, it talks about the sins committed in war. If war was not possible, then America may have had a chance of achieving brotherhood.
