The F-111 had served with the United States and Royal Australian Air force from the late 1960's up to 2010. With F-111 in Australian service, it became the fastest and longest range combat plane in South East Asia.
Being the first plane with variable wing design, the F-111 was the direct predecessor to B-1 Lancer and the F-14 Tomcat.
Due to its longish nose the Royal Australian Air force nicknamed the F-111 as "Aardvark", coined from a historical West Germanic language in South Africa, which directly translates to earth-pig.

The F-111 had not seen combat until 1973, due to the test crash of 3 F-111 from a horizontal stabilizer defect. The 347th Tactical Fighter Wing conducted bombing missions using the F-111 in Operations of Phuo Phiang III, Line Backer, and the Laotian Civil War. Unlike other aircraft, the F-111 could operate in most weather and did not require fuel tankers. Of the 4,000 combat missions, only 6 F-111 were lost in combat.
