A digital footprint is a trail of data you create while using the internet. It includes websites you visit, emails you send, and information you submit to online services(Techterms.com)

An "active digital footprint" includes data that you intentionally submit online. Sending an email contributes to your active digital footprint, since you expect the data be seen and/or saved by another person. The more email you send, the more your digital footprint grows. Since most people save their email online, the messages you send can easily remain online for several years or more.(Techterms.com)

A "passive digital footprint" is a data trail you unintentionally leave online. For example, when you visit a website, the web server may log your IP a address, which identifies your Internet service provider and your approximate location. While your IP address may change and does not include any personal information, it is still considered part of your digital footprint. (Techterms.com)

Your digital footprint can be "searched" means that hackers can find your personal information, or whatever is on your digital footprint, without you even knowing it. This is why experts give teens and even adults advice on how to clean up ones digital footprint in order to prevent hackers from invading. Just from your digital footprint, hackers can see where you live, what your name is, among many other things regarding your family and personal information. Basically, your digital footprint is vulnerable to attack and if you do not sustain and clean it up, it can be very troubling for you and your family.

There are many ways to help clean up your digital footprint. Some include:
-Enter your name into several search engines to make sure your identity has not been compromised
-Double-check your privacy settings but DO NOT trust them
-Create strong, memorable passwords that can be remembered easily by you but are not obvious to a supposed hacker
-Keep all your software up to date so viruses cannot infiltrate your digital footprint and your information cannot be leaked
-Review the use of apps on your mobile device: if you do not use it or need it, delete it
-Build your reputation through your behavior, meaning build a positive reputation, and don't involve yourself in any negative posts to keep your identity the way YOU want it
There are additional reasons too and here is a link:
