Music education for children and youth

As school districts cut back on funding for extracurricular activity, many times music is the one of the first to go. But we all know how important music is in our every day lives and I would argue that the basics of music is a "life skill" just like reading, writing, and mathematics. Choir music in particular allows for equitable access (don't need to pay for a instrument, costs are spread out over the choir members) and provide children and youth with a chance for personal development as well as the opportunity to be a part of a team. I would love to see focused support to elementary and high schools choir programs, especially in districts that suffer from a lack of funding. In addition, supporting teachers to become choir/music teachers in these districts. In my community, many music teachers are retiring with little to no qualified replacements, which means exposure to basic musical concepts may be nonexistent for families that cannot afford to pay for activities out of school.
