ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
was born in the small town of Pouy ( later renamed ST. VINCENT DE PAUL in his honor) and became a priest in 1600 at the young age of 19.
As a young man he ministered to the wealthy and powerful people of the time. However an appointment as chaplain to a poor and partly run down, forgotten by the rich, parish, and to galley prisoners, inspired him to help and work with those most marginalized and powerless.

Vincent urged his followers and believers to bring God’s justice and love to people who were unable to live a full human life and those who did not have the resources they deserved:

“Deal with the most urgent needs. Organise charity so that it is more efficient…teach reading and writing, educate with the aim of giving each the means of self-support. Intervene with authorities to obtain reforms in structure… there is no charity without justice.” FROM SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL.

CANONIZATION

In 1705, the Superior-General of the Lazarists asked if the process of canonization could be performed on Vincent. On 13 August 1729, he was declared "blessed" by the pope. Vincent was canonized nearly eight years later on 16 June 1737.
In 1737, Vincent's feast day was added in the Roman Calendar for celebration on 19 July, because his day of death was already used for the feast of saint cosmas and Damian. . The 1969 revision of the general roman calendar transferred his memorial to 27 September, moving Cosmas and Damian to 26 September to make way for him, as he is now better known in the West than they.
