Was conflict dealt with in a direct or indirect manner?

Conflicts/arguments in my foster family have always been handled in an indirect manner in which people who disagreed would pretend that there wasn't anything wrong between them but were still very clearly taking the conflict to heart. This always infuriated me because those conflicts never ended in a healthy way and I feel like my family ignore many of their problems now as a result, and this has made me much more open and honest with people I take issue with as a result.

Who made the major decisions in your family?

After my dad left, my mom just kind of shut down for a while; most days she never left her bed. My older brother started calling the shots for me and my younger brother, and made all of the decisions for us up until our mother was reported to CPS. After that the details get pretty messy between going in and out of foster care and having different biological parents reenter our lives at different times, but basically my brothers and I have always had to fend for and advocate for ourselves regardless of who we lived with at any given time. I know a lot of this is pretty tense to read, but to me it's just part of my backstory, so I hope I'm not putting anybody off with this.

How were you rewarded/punished?

If it was for work, I was rewarded with more work, haha. Apart from that I didn't get many rewards for anything, and I think it was usually fear of punishment that motivated me more. That's definitely had a negative effect on me, and I make sure to praise all of my son's accomplishments and to communicate to him when he's done something wrong.

Was competition or cooperation stressed?

You know, it's funny; when my parents were together it was one with my mom and the other with my dad. I'll never forget something my mom told me when I was little: my brothers would always be a part of my life, long after both of my parents are gone, and it was my job to make sure we don't screw up that kind of relationship. My dad would encourage to compete in order to always try to better ourselves, so that one day we'd learn to lead our own lives without the help of others . Looking back, I think they both had it right in their own way.
