My older brother started calling the shots for me and my younger brother, and made all of the decisions for us up until our mother was reported to CPS. After that the details get pretty messy between going in and out of foster care and having different biological parents reenter our lives at different times, but basically my brothers and I have always had to fend for and advocate for ourselves regardless of who we lived with at any given time. Apart from that I didn't get many rewards for anything, and I think it was usually fear of punishment that motivated me more. I'll never forget something my mom told me when I was little: my brothers would always be a part of my life, long after both of my parents are gone, and it was my job to make sure we don't screw up that kind of relationship. My dad would encourage to compete in order to always try to better ourselves, so that one day we'd learn to lead our own lives without the help of others .
