What is Yom HaZikaron and how does Israel observe it?

Yom HaZikaron is the day of national remembrance in Israel to commemorate all the soldiers and people who lost their lives during the struggle to defend the State of Israel. On this day we mourn and remember our fallen soldiers and all lives lost by terror. Yom HaZikaron, which goes by the Jewish calendar, begins with a siren at 8:00 in the evening. As soon as the siren is heard, Israeli citizens stop whatever they’re doing, wherever they are, and stand firm to honor those they’ve lost. People driving on highways stop their cars in the middle of the road to get out and stand in remembrance. A whole office will stop working and a family having dinner will stop eating in order to spend a minute in respectful silence.

After the first siren, the State Memorial Ceremony begins at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem. The Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, the Chief of the General Staff of the IDF, and the President take part in this ceremony.

The next day, there’s another two-minute siren at 11:00 in the morning. This siren marks the beginning of private memorial ceremonies that take place in cemeteries or schools.

At night, the final ceremony is held at Mount Herzl National Cemetery. This ceremony ends Yom HaZikaron and marks the beginning of Israel's Independence Day.

Generally, in other countries, the Remembrance Day (Yom HaZikaron) of fallen soldiers and the Independence Day occur in two separate days of the year. In Israel, it was decided in accordance with the law that the Independence Day needs to begin the moment that Remembrance Day ends.

This is because the State of Israel wouldn’t be able to celebrate its existence if it weren’t for those who gave their lives for it. We wouldn’t be able to have one of those days without the other one.

We honor their memory and everything they fought for, so that today, we can celebrate our independence.

Gabriela, we are truly sorry for your loss. We can’t imagine how difficult this past year must have been for you. David was undoubtedly an honorable soldier, and what’s more, an even better person. It’s heart-rending how we didn’t know about him. He seemed like a great son, father, brother and husband. Despite being such a good person, his life was unfairly taken from him. We want to let you know we will try to make justice for your loss. You are not alone. This event was terrible and we wouldn’t wish this upon anybody. Nevertheless (although it will not bring you that much comfort), thanks to your son there will be more diffusion about what’s happening in Gaza. We hope this conflict ends soon. Stay strong.

Julia S, Eliana C and Eva S

Dear David’s family, we send our deepest condolences. There are absolutely no words to express our sorrows. We were told about the empathetic person David was and the things he did for his people. Such a humble person, hanging out with lower-rank soldiers when he could’ve been with the higher rank ones. Playing tennis and expressing his love for it to his friends and to the little Yaheli.

We all know “not all heroes wear capes”, and he certainly was the perfect example for that. Risking all he had in hopes to take care of his nation, family and friends.

His efforts weren’t in vain, and we know the pain you feel is unexplainable. We hope by writing to you we can take a little bit of that away. We feel you and wish to be here to let you know that he will be remembered as the great person he was.

We hope this message finds you well or, at least, better than the day before. Such an impactful loss can make one feel as if their world was crumbling. In times such as the ones you are going through, it is important to keep oneself in contact with loved ones and friends, as if standing strong in the midst of a storm, resisting against it. We sincerely hope that you are able to stay strong and have the chance to be happy when remembering what a great man he was, since memories are something to always cherish.

With time, feelings of sorrow and grief soften - though they never completely fade away, given it some time, David will continue to shine like gold in your memories, even if he is no longer there - and the world can once again be full of colour. From the bottom of our hearts, we wish you the best in this hard time.

With all the love and the good things that he used to do for his people at Rehovot, I am pretty sure that his loss was devastating for all who have known him. Because he was a really valuable person. He liked to help with whatever he could, doing this as participating in the war helping other ones at the war zone instead of eating something delicious in his house. That is why, as Gabriela said, he fought like a lion and had a hurt of hope, which one gave to the other ones.

A person like him is totally a hero. That is why he has my respect, and I wish there would be more people like him; people who are ready to help each other without expecting nothing in return.

Finally, for those who had met him, I want to say to you that someone that died is never gone at all. They are still present in our memories and the good moments we spent together. Also, in this case, I think that we can learn about him. Because, with all the love he gave to the people, he made people feel good in times of war. This is why should not be lost, his amazing hope for the future and the human potential.

That is why, for all the ones who have known him, I wish to point out what a good person he was, and, If we keep remembering him, he will never be dead :)
