I think it’s not something (for the lack of a more precise word) fixed, static but rather it changes over time.

This perception of ourselves is highly influenced by our life experiences, the culture in which we are immersed, both at a macro and micro level (this involves nationality, language and religion as well as family and smaller communities), our interests, beliefs, values and the perspectives we have about life and the world.

Ultimately, the concept of race is a reflection of the ways in which humans organize and understand differences.

There have been, and still are, many groups of people who discriminate other people for looking "different" and feel superior because of that. But luckily, this concept has evolved and nowadays people can be proud of their race instead of feeling frightened or oppressed because of being the way they are.


Below, I'll leave two quotes of a book I had to read in order to sit for a final exam, Age of Iron by Coetzee, which is about the apartheid, and which had a huge impact on me:

"Now that child is buried and we walk upon him. Let me tell you, when I walk upon this land, this South Africa, I have a gathering feeling of walking upon black faces. They are dead but their spirit has not left them." (3.329)
After all of the atrocities she witnesses being committed towards her black neighbors, Mrs. Curren can't help but feel that all of the black people before them must have met horrific ends, too. What's interesting about this moment is that she seems to be making a statement about how if whites are really at the top of the heap, it's because they've actively held down the black people of South Africa for so long.


"I have not seen black people in their death before, Mr. Vercueil. They are dying all the time, I know, but always somewhere else. The people I have seen die have been white and have died in bed, growing rather dry and light there, rather papery, rather airy." (3.324)
Mrs. Curren starts to understand a huge discrepancy between the lives that whites in South Africa lead and the lives that blacks are forced into. She realizes that people of her race aren't subjected to the same kinds of violent deaths, which is really eye opening for her.

For me, the word "Memory” evokes not only memories of my childhood but also of the historical events of my own country. Even though I didn’t go through them myself, we, as citizens of the same country, have grown up listening to heart-breaking anecdotes of past events that occurred in and affected our country. 

Our collective memory allows us not to forget those times but to keep them present as a reminder of our pain and how we were able to overcome it, and also of our mistakes and how we learned from them so as not to let them take place ever again. 

Each country, group or even a family has its own collective memory that carries its history, which affects the development of the identity of its citizens/members and their individual memory as well.
