In some of his poems he refers to America as a woman; He explains how society at that time is using America for its own good, not thinking of the consequences that come with their actions. “devil-may-care men who have taken--to railroading--out of sheer lust of adventure—” (Line 12) The poem To Elsie by William Carlos Williams uses dramatic language to show America’s broken remarks for the American Dream. This creates a very dramatic tone for the audience and poem, it displays America’s desire for lust and passion with things they do not need. It also shows how America has it’s false pretense of The American Dream.

This includes rapid scene changes with deep meaning. “Lifeless in appearance, sluggish--dazed spring approaches—They enter the new world naked,--cold, uncertain of all--save that they enter.” (Lines 15-19)The poem Spring and All shows readers a dying and bare landscape for scenery. The poem starts with this type of scenery and quickly switches to an imaginative spring. This displays the view of how human and nature are pretty detached from each other. It highlights America’s difficulty to see that if they separate human nature from world nature they would be able to see what it really takes to achieve the American Dream.

Going through life aimlessly without structure or guidance, society has no vision of America’s goals and dreams. The poem Paterson displays the meaning of achieving the American Dream. With William Carlos Williams's second goal being to create a new, complete, American culture; This poem captures this idea.
