"Inside the house lived a malevolent phantom. People said he existed, but Jem and I had never seen him. People said he went out at night when the moon was down, and peeped in windows. When people's azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them. Any stealthy small crimes committed in Maycomb were his work" (Lee 10).

How he comes across: Boo comes across as scary and full of trouble to most of the town because of his actions and background story. His family also never leaves their home, leading to superstitions about what they're doing, or what happened to them.
How to empathize for him: Boo spends all his time at home because his father believes that anything that causes joy is a sin. They may stay home to prevent sinning, as they isolate themselves from the outside world. Also everybody is scared of him so if he were to leave his home he would have no friends.
