The speaker in this song is no other than The Weeknd (Abel). From the start of 2017, the Weeknd and Selena Gomez started dating. A short relationship that lasted till October of that same year. Rumor has it that he wrote this particular song because of his break up with her. He released his album shortly after his break up in 2018. (Album: My Dear Melancholy).
The occasion is his breakup with Selena Gomez or any other ex he's had a deep connection with.
Abel's audience is Selena Gomez. He is appealing to her about their breakup. Abel makes us relate to those hurtful break ups we've had during our teen years and how personal you can take it.
The purpose of this song is that the Weekend will always love Selena, even after everything he's been threw with her. As the subject: breakups are always hard when you've shared a deep connection with that certain person.

In the first few lines, the Weeknd uses powerful emotions in his lyrics. In the lines "We found each other/ I helped you out of a broken place/ You gave me comfort, but falling for you was my mistake" the last sentence gives us a realistic picture on how hurt he felt and realized that he made a mistake in choosing her as his girlfriend. The weeknd gives a short but brief story line of his relationship with Selena Gomez. It starts out as a happy and wonderful relationship, then turns into sadness and heartbreak.

The second example is in lines 5-6 "I put you on top, I put you on top
I claimed you so proud and openly" stating how proud and grateful he was about his ex. The way the words are structured in this sentence clearly describes someone who made that person their number one priority out of everything else.

In the second versus, the Weeknd says "And when times were rough, when times were rough/ I made sure I held you close to me" is commonly needed in reality situations where you have bad days or you're going through issues that is affecting your mental state. A hug is always an necessity for those who definitely are going through something.

Finally, towards the end of the song he states "Babe, call out my name (say call out my name, baby)/ Girl, call out my name, and I'll be on my way, girl" referring that if Selena ever wanted to get back with him or wanted to talk again, he wouldn't give up that chance. In some toxic relationships, usually the ones who struggle during the breakup, end up giving the person a chance again even after everything.

The lyrics gave strong appeals about how Abel felt after his break up with celebrity Selena Gomez. The video also demonstrates many interesting appeals and how a person really feels after being broken up with their significant other. Overall, The Weeknd is effective in both the lyrics and video in convincing his audience (his ex) that breakups are definitely a different type of hurt and that he still loves her unconditionally.
