What is Abstract Art?

Abstract art is a movement that occurred about 100 years ago, and focuses on letting our imagination take over. Abstract has no rules; it does not confine to one certain style or color, and does not require a certain material. Many do question whether abstract is art at all, or if you can ever really be good at abstract art. Abstract art is a legitimate style of art, and has been for over 100 years. The art itself is so interesting because it does not need the artist to paint with oil paints, and have anything look like anything at all. Abstract does not visually represent reality, and uses colors, shapes and lines to create an effect.

“Abstract art has been with us in one form or another for almost a century now and has proved to be not only a long-standing crux of cultural debate but a self-renewing, vital tradition of creativity. We know that it works, even if we’re still not sure why that’s so, or exactly what to make of that fact.”
Pictures of Nothing: Abstract Art Since Pollock, Kirk Varnedoe, 2006, Princeton University Press, 41 William Street, Princeton, NJ 08540 [p. 29]

Why is Abstract Important?

Abstract is a way of letting feelings out onto canvas; an angry person might splash paint over a canvas and smear some black on it, and a happy person might use colors to create a bright array of dots. When you view abstract, it gives you an emotion, and often leaves viewers to guess what's even going on. Abstract gives us that space and oppurtunity to infer and think about what's happening in a certain painting, it gives us a perspective.
