Abuse: The main character, Rick, experiences verbal abuse from his father. Ricks father tells him that he's nothing but a looser and that he's not a man. When rick informs him of his going into the army, Ricks father says "Good Rick, that's what you need to become a man, God knows you won't be one otherwise" (Hughes, 35). His fathers verbal abuse his whole life, is what pushes him over the edge and made him enlist in the army. "Maybe my dads right, maybe that will make me a man"( Hughes, 37)

Verbal abuse is defined as a negative defining statement told to the victim or about the victim, or by withholding any response, thereby defining the target as non-existent. Verbal abuse, just as physical abuse will and can cause many problems with self confidence, self worth, depression and self destructive behavior. Verbal abuse can include threats, rude comments in a informal matter, hurtful comments etc. Contrary to what many people think, verbal abuse are more often done by family members rather than strangers.
LINK:
http://oureverydaylife.com/effects-abusive-parents-child-relationships-4744.html

The author of the books Search and destroy conveys a very important messgw through the eyes of the main character, Rick. The author expresses in the beginning of the book that Rick wants to find out who he is. When Rick enlisted in the army he expects to come back knowing exactly who he is and exactly what he wants. When Rick gets out of the army, he is wounded and realizes that he still doesn't know who he is. All he knows is that he has become someone's he is both proud of and ashamed of and while he learned new things, he still didn't find out who he was inside. The message the author isn't trying to get across is that sometimes you set out to do something and search and search for the answer to your question and come out of that situation with no answer but with something totally different. "And even then, Rick stool didn't know who he was, but he did find who he set out to be " (Hough,21)
LINK: http://oureverydaylife.com/effects-abusive-parents-child-relationships-4744.html
