A social issue is a problem that negatively impacts a large number of people or society as a whole, and often effects quality of life, or creates barriers to accessing basic necessities. Who decides what is considered a social issue is a complex mix of the current government, media, public opinion, and the dominant discourse created by people in power. The social issues that garner attention are often those deemed important based on the values and beliefs of the current government.

A social issue is a problem that is large and affects many people. The people decide that it is an issue and might bring it forward, start speaking about it, and raise awareness. A social issue brings negative experiences to the people it affects. Gender inequality is a social issue; it affects half of the population in a negative way and is a structural issue that requires large collective changes to fix.

Something becomes a social issue when it negatively impacts a substantial number of people in society. Social issues can be defined by the people experiencing them, the media, politicians, or the general public. Some issues get more attention than others because of political interests, the influence of the people defining them, or because they place a heavy burden on society as a whole. Drug addiction is a good example of this

A social issue is a problem that affects people systematically; it is tied to how society is structured. An issue becomes socially visible when people recognize that it is not just about personal choices but also about structures, policies, and social attitudes. Media, government, and advocacy groups often pick which issues get attention. Some problems become well known, while others that affect marginalized groups may be ignored. Calling something a social issue is important because it shows that everyone shares responsibility, and it can lead to change.
