Expeditions work the best for me. This is because it tends to be rich and challenges one group of pax in different ways. I can see some being stressed by the though of whether they can complete it. Some are working out how to cooperate with their partners. Some are feeling the physically fatigue as the journey gets going.

One particular one was a JC group started to storm , believe it or not, when they were clearing logistics after expedition. They were a class and they were already having tensions and misunderstandings build since Day 1 in school. These negative feelings boiled over. I had to facilitate the emotional discussion. I was relieved that a few misunderstandings were cleared from the discussion. E.g. one clique thought classmate A from the other clique was sarcastic. She actually told she was being funny.

I believe they left the programme being more aware of their own actions and they all have a part to make their relationships work out.

Yes, I have stormed in my group before and it did bring about the breakthrough towards "performing" for me at the end of the day.

This happened when I was entrusted and given a special role of a "leader" to lead my own small group during my Secondary 2 camp. This camp was different from the other yearly camps that I have attended because it was the camp where I was separated from my original class and my group was a mixture of people from different classes whom most of them I have never talked to before. A "good leader" to me is someone who can make decisions on the go and make the final call for the team. Thus, when I was given the role of a "group leader" I felt that this was a good opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and hold the responsibility of leading my team well.

However, my own expectations of becoming a "good leader" came to a short end when my team faced a conflict. Our first challenge for our camp was to travel around Singapore to complete different challenges and collect as many points as possible. The top three teams with the highest points at the end of the day would receive a prize. Based on the definition of storming, during this stage, group members may show negative behaviors and test the limits of the leaders while reacting to situations with little independence or initiative. The first setback that we faced was, one of my team members was not feeling well as she showed signs of fatigue since we have been walking around almost the entire day and have yet taken our lunch break since we were too engrossed in earning the points. Thus, we had to reroute and replan our next destination as we had to find the nearest place for us to settle down to have a good lunch break. However, since we were responsible to take care of our own lunch, I argued with my group members because firstly, we could not decide on an exact location that we wanted to head to, and second, we could not decide on the place that we wanted to eat at. Everyone had different opinions and had their own plans in mind thus, it was difficult to make a decision that would please everyone.

On top of that, we were in a public area thus, it was more difficult to settle down as our background was so crowded and noisy. When we finally found a place to settle down to make a decision, everyone was not being cooperative. However, I took this chance to show my leadership capabilities by stepping up and making the decision for the team. Since everyone was feeling lethargic, we decided to head to the nearest place so that we did not have to walk that much. In the end, I used the voting system to decide the place to eat and the majority votes would be the choice of food that we will eat. At the end of the day, everyone was satisfied with the decision and we had a good lunch together. This small breakthrough brought towards "performing" for me in the end because I and my group members definitely became more united at the end of the day and we achieved good results in the end as we were among the top three teams who scored the highest points. My group members could rely on me to lead and guide them thus, I felt that my responsibility as a leader was accomplished.

I was very proud of myself because, at the end of the day, I definitely bonded and got a lot closer to my group members that I could still remember the special bonding that we had till this day. I feel that storming either break or builds a team but in my case, it definitely builds my team because we could resolve the conflict together and come together as one. It was a small conflict but it definitely helped build my team even stronger as we could easily overcome other challenges since we were all in it together.

My memorable experience was Sailing from Singapore to Penang.

I brought a group of individuals who participated in their
NYAA Adventurous Journey.

The journey planned for 4 - on 8 - off shifts where everyone on board
will be "working" for 4 hours and resting for 8hours.

Halfway through the journey, during the night, after tacking,
our Genoa Sheets got into a double feeding on the winch. We couldn't remove it
and decided to leave it since we've set the sail ideal to the wind direction towards the next destination. We
decided to repair it once daylight came and closer to the next destination.

At about 4 am, near Pangkor island, we lost sight of the
other sailboat. Couldn't establish communications through phone, VHF and
satellite phone.

We started a search and rescue mission to find the other boat
using their last point captured on the WhatsApp live location.

During the search, the wind picked up, and our winch gave
way, making the Genoa swing violently. This created a series of other
unfortunate events, breaking parts of the boat one by one.

During this moment, the team got into a stressful situation,
and crew members started to shout at each other for not doing their job well.

In all that chaos, we decided to move back into the cockpit, sit
down, and reorganise ourselves before proceeding with the crisis management
plan.

We managed to fix the broken parts with jerry-rigs to sustain
towards the next destination.

Day broke, and we found the other sailboat drifting towards
the Malacca TSS. We quickly motor sailed towards her and found that they had
some issues too and couldn't sail straight.

Both boats did a jerry-rig and went ahead to Penang.

We did a group debrief on the experience we had and came to
some learnings:
1. If something is wrong, quickly fix it, don't wait for
another better opportunity.
2. Always keep communicating so that the problem can be
solved at an early stage if there is an issue.
3. In times of chaos, stop, communicate as a team, reorganise
and make decisions on a clear mind with everyone's efforts.

We live to tell the stories now. :)

Wouldn't recommend this but the most impactful experience I had was during a sea/land expedition way back when I was a student in Polytechnic.

The expedition had 2 phases to it, One group will start with a Sea Ex, camp over then followed by Land Ex the next day. The other group did the opposite. Both groups were to camp together over night at a pre-determined camp site.

My group started with the Sea Ex, everything went south when the expedition leader decided that we are behind time and made a call to kayak thru at a point where it was almost very physically challenging for beginning kayakers. The group are all paired, strong kayakers with amateur kayakers. Due to the call, the group was separated. Last group to reach campsite was 4am in the morning rather than 7pm the day before.

Long story short, we all made it safely to campsite. Things could have been very different if at the point when things are going south, the leaders of the expeditions had not remain cool headed and improvised and willing to sort out issues. Many measures were implemented for the other group on Sea Ex the next day and the rest of the expedition was almost anti-climatic.

The expedition leaders had a good scare but due to their cool headedness and skills, they managed to keep everyone save and learnt from that experience. Subsequent expeditions had better measures to prevent similar challenges and difficulties from happening and on hindsight, we found out about some geographical knowledge that still serve me till today.

I conducted a team building activity for secondary 2 students. It was conducted during this covid period.

It was interestingly challenging as the students are still unfamiliar with their classmates as they spent their first year together virtually instead of going thru the usual orientation camp and so on. With the awkward dynamic of the class, the challenge is on me to make them not only enjoy their time but also take away one memorable lesson home.

The activity was called human traffic. It was our last activity before we call it a day and join the rest of the cohort, the students were mentally and physically drained from the whole day of team building.

I tried to change up the game and make it more interactive by getting them to appoint a few representative as their avatar. At the same time, I also gave them hints but they still struggle. And by now, they are starting to lose their motivation and drive.

Towards the last 5 minutes, I decided that as much as it was the objective to get the students to figure the activity out, I also wanted them to leave the room satisfied with their new finding, especially since they showed ther grit and creativity trying to crack the pattern.

I got 1 representative to come up to watch the "answer" video. Once, the video is done, they went back to the group to solve the human traffic. Slowly one group at a time managed to see and understand the pattern. The satisfaction and look of accomplishment on their faces told me that I did the right move and I was proud of it. To top it off, even the teacher that was participating together was celebrating it together with the students.

It was a 7D6N journey-based expedition in Victoria National Park. On the last day, we couldn't make it to Mountain Creek campsite and hence decided to set up an emergency campsite.
Given the past few days of roughening out, the group was pretty self-sufficient and capable. After I gave a briefing on what to be done, the students set off to make camp. I took 2 boys to start bashing for the nearby river, it's easy to get lost so I entrusted them to mark out the path we took. Took us quite a while.

Long story short, the camp was set up and everyone went into the jungle for water supply. Cooked, washed and slept.
In our debrief, this day was the best highlight for the team. The reason was because the team felt the sense of urgency, the "survival" mode kicked in, they had to adapt without the commodity of an established campsite, improvised their way through issues, be the best supporter for each other. The boys loved their adventure with me, that was their Bear Grylls moment. The picture above was the stream we found.

Till this day, we remembered that place as the Jurassic Campsite.

Brought my Sec 2 student leaders (CCA) to OB Sabah for an 8D trip. Sea and Land Ex combined. One of the craziest part was when we commenced the Sea Ex and the storm was pushing towards us against the current, and we had to paddle hard to reach the island destination. Students persevered but still required a bit of help from 2 safety boats to put them ashore. Right after that, during the first day of land ex, I was alone when my colleague needed to bring a girl back who suffered a facial injury from falling 4m into a sloped ravine. The experience of ensuring all 20 students remaining completed the experience of climbing Mama Hill (Mile 32) without injury or illness was a feat itself.

An activity that impose challenges to the participants was when they had set up a fire to cook their meals. As most of them are trained to cook in the outdoors, there are only one issue that they face, which is they do not have any " fuels" to set a fire. As it was a leadership camp, i informed the, that we expect them to think and work it out together. Look around at their surrounding .
They did and they figure it out by using twigs, dry leaves and dead branches to do so. The good learning and impactful point was that , they should not really rely on anything and need to be prepare to face anything ( as there might be a sudden change in situation ) , act accordingly.

We all had to struggle a lot as none of us knew each other and we had to go through the different stages of group development which is forming, norming. None of us had any outdoor experience, and it was really challenging at first, however the instructors were kind enough to teach us the process, and eventually we were able to cook our own food, help to pitch each other tent, cycle, and kayak. It was a unqiue experience as I am a introvert where the other members were more extroverted so I was confused so to why I was entrusted the role of 'leader' and not any the other member. However as time progresses I was eventually able to lead the team to completing the different tasks with help from the Obs instructors. On the last day, it was sad for all for us, as although we were strangers before the camp, we grew a lot together as a team, and we even tell each other about funny things and little secrets that happen in our life, we also had a campfire and took photos.

The camp consisted of activities such as high challenge course, kayaking, outdoor cooking, tent pitching and map orienteering.

As it was my first time being a camp leader, I was nervous. I had certain worries such as whether my boys will learn something meaningful from the camp, whether the flow of the camp will be smooth and whether the boys will develop certain intra/interpersonal skills by the end of the camp.

Throughout the camp, I tried to give encouragement to the boys, as some of them are inexperienced in the outdoors. Thus, I encouraged the others who are experienced, to pay more attention to those who are inexperienced and try to offer guidance and support when necessary. I even saw a boy, who was experienced, motivating and supporting his inexperienced friend when participating in the high elements course.

The boys learned to be independent and boosted their confidence in sharing how they feel with one another (through reflection). They also mentioned how they can apply certain skills they acquired, into their lives (e.g. learning how to cook). To me, this experience was impactful because I can see how my boys improved and shaped themselves to think critically, be independent and provide support for one another. It gave me a better perspective and insight as to how a camp leader oversees things, as compared to being a participant in a camp.

It was a kayaking expedition with secondary students and I was one of the instructors that was involved in the expedition. We had a target to kayak from Sembawang beach to Pasir Ris by 6 as our campsite would be at Pasir Ris. I was the sweeper thus I would be constantly at the back, ensuring that all the participants are ahead of me and are doing okay. However I personally suffer from motion sickness and thus the choppy waters made me really nauseous. I constantly try to push through it but I kept throwing up and it really made me want to quit. However, I constantly told myself that if I do complete, it'll be an achievement and the students interactions really made it much more bearable. Although I kept it from everyone, I was happy that I managed to complete this with the students and it was really fun. I always remember this enjoyable moment as I overcame this challenge. They were really the sweetest bunch and I was just ecstatic that I was able to be part of this experience with them.

I was a part of a 5 days mountain climbing expedition with a group of friends who was completing their NYAA Adventurous Journey. Being a senior, I took part in the planning and preparing for 3 months. We decided on Mt Strong as it was know to be on the challenging side and it had 7 peaks to conquer. I was on the heavier side and always thought I was going to bring the team down. I even cried on the day of departure not wanting to go as I did not want to bog them down even though we prepared so much for the team. However the team encouraged me and we set of on our journey.

When we arrived, the team decided to repack our logistics to ensure that I did not carry much weight so that we can climb together at an even pace without me being bogged down with my load. Long story short, we managed to get to base camp in good time and after we set up camp, we had a debrief for our day. The next day to the summit, we had set a turn around time for the second peak. We almost missed the time as we all tired and were not aware of our timing. Our expedition leader and forest guide was the one to stop us to remind us of the time hence we made our way back to base camp.

It was good learning to us as if we did not set the turn around time, we could have trekked through the night and not have proper shelter to rest and might even have enough rations to follow through the journey. The whole experience brought about the importance of self-management and self efficacy to the team. Our nightly reflection helped us become better outdoor leaders as we understood how participants felt and our expedition lead was a great role model on how to manage a group in such challenging environments.

The day before the sec three camp i did some last minute packing and i was actually thinking that the entire camp would actually be a waste of time as i actually wanted to study or play some games but since the camp was compulsory i had no choice but to go.The last experience i had with a school camp that wasn't held in school or by CCA's was my P5 camp and i did not enjoy it that much as it was quite boring.

The big day arrived, when i arrived at school i saw the entire sec 3 cohort in our pe shirts and all the different radiant colours of the shirts i really felt the mood of the holiday seasons where we dint have to bother about studying . when we arrived at the camp site the sun was blazing hot and we had to wait in it for what seemed like 3 hours and when we finally got to move out of the spot we were sitting in and we went on to pitch our tents which was going to be our beds for two nights so we better pitch it properly so it wouldn't cave in on us in the middle of the night. After that we were give group names from "The Jungle Book" and my class name was "Chil" which was a bird , Our trainers name was Tarzan and the co-trainer was Jane . We first saw Tarzan before we left school and we all expected him to be really fierce but throughout the entire camp he was really fun to talk to and was a nice trainer , so apparently you really can't judge a book from its cover. After that we begun our first activity which was to build a raft which could safely transport us through a small part of the sea which separates what i think was malaysia and singapore , when i saw what we had to build the raft i was thinking in my head "how are we going to get this out in the sea" as we had poles and rubber floats and had to tie it together with ropes which i had no experience with and felt that it might be the major factor that would prevent us from achieving our goal. But luckily for us Johnathan Lum was in my part of the group and he is from the scouts and has experience with tying ropes, now the problem was the design which we first tried a car like design but realised it wouldn't be able to support the weight of us after a while so after a few minutes of brainstorming we managed to get our design, a square like one and it managed to bring us through the entire time while the other team's raft broke down mid-way unluckily Shintaro's spectacles dropped own into the sea and couldn't be found and it was new too , but at least he brought spares which he could still see in . After that we had to dismantle the raft and since we tied it alot it took really long to untie the entire raft so we lost to the other team in that expect .

Other than that another activity i can remember is an event which we had to go around the site looking for thing and remembering them and finally make a map of it. i can remember this challenge as midway through it i saw Cheng boon's group and they found what i think was a maggot and put it inside the file it was also really disgusting as it looked like it pooped in the file .... quite disgusting if you ask me.

After that it was almost time for us to sleep where we went to take baths , brush our teeth and all that stuff. I was sleeping with Johnathan , Shintaro , Benjamin , William , Glen and Wesley i think hopefully i gt that right and before we slept Johnathan put some powder on his body and the entire tent was filled with it and i could bear to sleep in the tent filled with the powder but i was quite tired so i just laid down and slept

The second day was the most fun out of all of it as that was the day i got to know the Red One and he's a really fun guy to hang out with . This was the day where we had to get down and dirty in mud, where we went out of the camp compound and into a jungle. The trip to the jungle really reminded me of my NCC cebu trip in December with all the mud and after alwhile we reached it. The black swamp filled with mud where we has to sit in and and put on our face paint and more or less painted our shirts with black mud but hey t least it was an enjoyable experience with alot of fun and laughter . Although there was one really annoying part to it which was cleaning ourselves from the MUD where our shoes were we were almost totally black covered with mud , we were sprayed with a hose to clean ourselves before we got our camp t-shirt and went to bath . That one bath felt really awesome after being in mud and finally getting clean . Now the highlight of the camp was about to begin as dusk came around.

The Campfire , the main event of the camp was about to begin . My class was busy preparing for our cheer but when i went out of our lodge where \we were practicing i saw our trainers dancing kind of just knew what they were going to do. Our principle , Mrs Lucy Toh our principle came and lit the campfire where she said the words we were waiting for the whole time "Long pants" . The entire performance was really enjoyable especially the dancing challenge where we sent the best dancer in our class, Riggs , but sadly he only made it to the second last round but he's still awesome . After that was our class cheer where we did something really funny and quite embarrassing but at least we were doing it as a class, what was it? Moving our hips back and forth singing the direction we were moving in . And at last the fire burned out and the campfire was put to an end .

The last night of the camp so many things to do but what i did was sleep, but it was shortened by the rain in the middle of the night where i was the only one awake to close the tent to prevent the rain from coming in while everyone else was asleep.

The last day , we woke up and took all our stuff out of our tent and started to keep the tents for the other schools to use . After that we started cleaning the site and i was in charge of the toilet but it was actually quite fun just spraying the dirt away with a hose. Finally the end of the camp and also the winner of best class , which was it ? Who else but 3S2 where we won and got a notebook . We got onto our bus and said goodbyes to our trainers and went back to school. After the camp there's only one place we went to , Macdonald's where we ate our breakfast before heading home for a long sleep.

Just now i broke my shell and came out to do a part time job and my wished courses online.
I like to share my experience when i went to learn swimming lesson with my friends. We had a coach and he instructed some of the basics . Then we started to practice on our own - eventually learn to float and started swimming but did not practice to control the breath and landing down after swimming. So a panic attacked for me in water. Then slowly i followed the instruction of the coach and learning slowly. This also helped my friends not to follow our own idea but to listen to the instruction carefully.

My CCA was having and adventure camp and I was tasked to lead orienteering, this was challenging for the cadets as they had never done orienteering before and were supposed to know and understand the basics in less than an hour. When I taught them some seemed confused but were not voicing out despite me asking if they understood multiple times. I told them that there would be an activity they were expected to complete and they had to understand as no one would spoon feed them, this led to them realizing that they were in a camp and they had to be independent, so those who did not understand voiced out and asked or they asked their friends who understood. The learning impact was that they learnt to be more independent rather than waiting for information to be spoon fed to them

It was a 4D3N camp somewhere in 2018. Similar to OBS, this camp allowed us to interact with people from other schools. With each individuals' personalities, there were many points in time where storming happened. There were also many reflections conducted at the end of each day, allowing us to express our feelings and thoughts so that we could learn from one another. At the end of the camp, I could see the changes in everyone. From being arrogant and self-centered on the first day, they were more empathetic, understanding and willing to work with each other in the team. All in all, it was a good experience.

Back in year 1, we had to go for a 5D4N OBS trip. As someone who has not been to OBS before, I could already tell that it would be something different from what we usually experience back at home; living in the outdoors, learning how to be independent, overcoming obstacles etc. However, things were much more challenging than expected as we had to go for a 15km hike and a kayaking expedition within these 5 days. The hike was really tiring and strenuous for all of us and the kayaking expedition made a lot of us feel unwell. However, towards the end of this trip, we all felt like we overcame a huge obstacle together and managed to persist through tough times together as one whole batch. Despite of the challenges we face in life, the sense of accomplishment towards the end might be much more fulfilling.

One impactful experience I had was when I went to OBS for the very first time. It was during the end of semester 1 and i was pretty worried about the camp. I had never been to OBS before and from what I heard and deduced from the instructions and emails, it would be challenging. Let's skip to during the camp. On day 2 of the camp, my instructor said something while we were belaying ach other that left a deep impact on me. He said that you were the climber, an example of a child. The belayers were examples of your parents and the on watchers were your friends and siblings. He said that the parents (belayers) were working hard to support us and pull us up when we needed help. The on watchers similarity were cheering us on. He said that if we slipped up or fell, the family and friends would be very sad. And i dont know why this example of a loving and supportive family impacted me so hard, but from then on, i tried to appreciate them more

It was a memorable camp during my ITE days as a facilitator for the students, where I had to lead a group of secondary students that consisted of 8–10 of them. They came together as a non-intact group, which means they are not familiar with each other because they are sports leaders from different CCAs.

However, at the start, it was quite challenging for me and my assistant to handle each of them, but as time went on, after playing various energizing games and bonding games, I would say that they are able to talk to each other easily and comfortably. So the thing that led it to be an impactful experience for me as a newbie facilitator at that point was that it may seem quite stressful at the start to manage the students with different personalities and behaviors. After awhile, it starts to be more interesting after getting to know each of them and bonding with each other for 3 days.

One particularly impactful activity involved a team-building challenge where participants had to work together to solve a complex problem within a limited timeframe. What made this experience impactful was the level of collaboration and problem-solving skills it required from the participants. The challenge was designed to simulate real-world scenarios where teams often face tight deadlines and ambiguous tasks. Participants had to communicate effectively, leverage each other's strengths, and think creatively to overcome obstacles. Through this activity, participants not only learned about the importance of teamwork and communication but also gained insights into their own strengths and areas for improvement. The pressure of the challenge pushed them out of their comfort zones, allowing them to discover new ways of approaching problems and working together as a cohesive team.
