The Mentoring Research Network (MRN) of the African Community of Planetary Partners for Health and Environment (ACOPPHE) calls for deeper and broader research on the interactions between human health and the rapidly changing planetary environment. In the global South, there is increasing awareness that tackling these challenges may require radical approaches, new ways of thinking, and healing intentions to achieve transformation beyond feeling helpless and overwhelmed by global crises. The Mentoring Research Network (MRN) is a growing African-based platform, spearheaded by vibrant multidisciplinary researchers, academicians, and scholars committed to tackling the complex and interconnected challenges which relate to anthropocentrism and sustainability of the African continent and the global south by extension. It is our pleasure to collaborate with EcoHealth International working together for a healthy, just, and sustainable planet!

Examples of published papers by the MRN members in the links below:
Oladunjoye, Iyiola Olatunji, Yusuf Amuda Tajudeen, Habeebullah Jayeola Oladipo, and Mona Said El-Sherbini. 2022.

The B@seball project (funded by the Belgian Science Policy belspo/BRAIN) is trying to understand children's health (as per skin microbiome eg) in the context of the school environment in Belgium. This connects to broader questions of land planning and environmental inequalities in a populated, urbanised country such as Belgium. We are in the process of analysing data, but are working closely with schools involved, NGOs and public institution involved in school greening initiatives, preventative health, etc.

Collective care as Climate Justice

Evidence suggests that engaging in collective climate action can help people struggling to cope with eco-anxiety and climate grief. However, active people (politically or a-politically) often experience burnout, identity loss, shame from not being active enough or dissonance of the individualist responses to systemic issues. If people are encouraged to become active to improve one area of their mental well-being then there is a duty of care that they are sent into movements that look after their change makers? Failure to create and maintain cultures of collective care and safety for activists and advocates, not only risks the sustainability of movements but also risks causing harm to those who have become attracted to activism to ease the burdens of climate crisis. In saying that, we note that 'safety' is relative to one's socio-political context.

Climate Justice Union of Western Australia is working with people, particularly young people, in our advocacy networks to ground climate justice action in collective care, for a more connected and sustainable movement!

Read more and stay tuned for our latest Participatory Action Research reflections and findings:

https://climatejusticeunion.org/news

Region: West Oceania (Noongar Boodja / South Western Australia)
