For our first lesson we did a read-aloud in Spanish. When I read the title he immediately said "Pues soy de Mexico," "Well im from Mexico." As we read, he question on how someone can be from mountains and rivers. Why he wasn't giving her a clear answer. I explained to him that people come for experiences, traditions, and nature.

Spanish: Jose is only fully fluent in Spanish. He is still learning to read and write in Spanish but is good at decoding words. He is able to sound out words when reading to figure out how to pronounce them or spell them (Theres been times where he even corrects me in my pronunciation).

English: Struggles a lot with English. He does not speak, write, or read in English. He is very limited on what he can read and say such as, book, cards, page, and number. His form of decoding and learning English is all done through Google translate on an IPad.

Read Aloud #2

For the second lesson, we did a read-aloud in both English and Spanish. The student was set to read the Spanish lines, and I read the English lines. Although the student was at first up for it after the first page, he asked for the online read-aloud. I asked the student as to why, and he just responded with "I don't know how to read." I was confused as to why Jose all of a sudden didn't want to read. He had no issue with reading the first time. Although I was upset that he didn't feel like reading, I understood that he is very shy and nervous about reading out loud to others. I want to counties to make him feel comfortable, and the rest of the book was read through and read aloud online.

Although there were issues with getting the student to read out loud when it came to the comic book activity, the student was excited. He liked the idea of using drawing rather than words to describe what he learned, as it's not his strong suit. The whole time he was drawing, he was set on making sure that the drawings fit the images of the book and even asked if I could go back or pause at a page. It seemed like the student gained back their excitement that they had lost at the beginning of the lesson.

Here, the students showed understanding of the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Although we didn't get to the writing aspect, they still showed that at the beginning of the story, the butterflies first passed through the park with the river(Rio), where the kids were swimming. Then the middle of their journey, they passed the mountains. At the end of their journey, they reached Mexico.

They show good signs of comprehension and show they understand a text and the story. They stopped to tell me where they think the middle of the story is. They stopped to tell what was happening in the illustrations. They asked questions such as, "Why are they leaving?", "How do they not die?" and "When do they go back after reaching Mexico?"

He described that they saw them as caterpillars, then saw them turn into cocoons, and that they were set to hatch any day.

Seeing the student describe the life cycle of the butterflies helped me see more how he applied knowing the beginning, middle, and end in a real-life context.

The following week, I got to experience seeing Jose and his classroom release the butterflies outside in their playground.

After the second lesson, I learned that the student knows and can try in everything, but because he lacks confidence, he always chooses not to do something or mentions he can't. For Next time, I want to keep encouraging the students. I can start the lesson first by giving more background context and listing the objects as "I can" statements. Where the students will read out loud "I can..." to give them that confidence.
