Orville and Wilbur Wright the Wright brothers launched the first manned flight of a powered aircraft in 1903. The plane's frame was made entirely from wood and had a wingspan of about 12 metres. The Wright Flyer is known as the first ever aeroplane and was a significant step in the process of advancement. Historical context. The Wright Flyer was a lot sturdier than other attempts before this. The Wright brothers had a very significant influence on the aeroplane, wing and engine designs before them but they cracked the code of how to pierce it all together. Design Elements. Since the first flight of the Wright flyer aeroplanes have progressed in many ways. The aeroplanes have been built on what was used in the original Wright Flyer. Aeroplanes now are built with a more streamlined design.

Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier the french brothers launched the first manned flight of a hot air balloon and the first step in the aviation timeline. On September 19, 1783, they flew it for 10 minutes. Malfunctions. In the early years of hot air balloons, they blew up very often and commonly crashed. They were very faulty in the beginning. Intended and alternate functions. To begin with, hot air balloons were used for transportation and occasionally for military functions a bit later on. Nowadays These balloons are almost uniquely used for recreational purposes.

The first practical helicopter in America was the VS-300. It was also the first successful helicopter in history to employ the one rotor, which is currently widely used. Because of this it has been known as the original and first ever helicopter. Malfunctions. The malfunctions of the helicopter happened during the making of it. There were issues of how to get it off the ground and there was lots of new technology made to help this. Intended & Alternative Functions. The VS 300 was made as a military helicopter but nowadays helicopters are mainly used for recreational purposes mainly and for things like transportation.

On the 27th of August 1939 The Heinkel He 178 flew for the first time. The Heinkel was a big step in this aviation timeline because it was the first plane to fly using a turbojet. A turbojet is a propeller and a gas turbine. Functional and physical nature. The Heinkel 178 was 7.48m and 7.2m in wingspan was generally silver with a bit of orange on it. The crew was only one person and the aeroplane weighed about 2000kg at takeoff. Social Environment. The Heinkel He 178 was developed and first flown in the months leading up to WW2 meaning there would have been tensions between countries. This would have brought along the development of this aeroplane and might have rushed to get it in the air.

The Boeing 747 is a large, long-range wide-body aircraft that was developed and produced in the US by Boeing Commercial Aeroplanes. On February 9, 1969, there was the maiden flight. The 747 was one of the first planes to be called a Jumbo Jet. Malfunctions. In the testing of the Boeing 747, there were malfunctions. The problem was the evacuation process when the plane was built the plane had to be able to be evacuated in under 90 seconds and without injuries, The 747 had a time of 2.5 minutes with multiple injuries. Social Environment. The reason for the creation of the Boeing 747 was that the airline business was ramping up and the airlines needed a bigger commercial plane that could fly long-distance flights. This is what brought along the development of the 747.

The Airbus A380 is currently one of the biggest passenger planes in the world. It is 73 metres in length and weighs 560 tonnes at takeoff it is 24 metres high and the most passengers it has ever carried is 615. The Airbus A380 first flew on 27 April 2005 and has passed 800,000 flights since then. Physical environment. The Airbus A380 is used by 4 main airlines, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, and Qantas. It has now been stopped and airbus is no longer making them but there are still 254 of them in the world. Functional and physical nature. The Airbus A380 is a wide-bodied plane; it is generally white and has the airline's name on it. Its function is to fly lots of people long distances.

The 2050 plane I designed is quite similar in the way it looks in this drawing but I decided to make it bigger as the need for easier transport. The plane is 100 metres in length and 34 metres tall. This means it is very big and I have decided its use is as a commercial airline plane. It has many more turbo jets and has a wider-bodied back end to balance out the weight of the wings higher up on the plane as well as some extra stability. The tip is much more aerodynamic to make it fly much faster. Functional and Physical nature. The turbo jets are powered by electricity which is stored higher up the plane in very big batteries. It would be made of an aluminium outer shell as it is a light material but the interior would be well insulated and support the outer shell with structured supports of steel.

It had traditional landing gear and was a low-wing metal monoplane. Social environment. The Douglas DC-3 was built in the time leading up to WW2 and therefore was a big step in the aviation timeline. It was researched and manufactured when there were tensions between countries. Physical and functional nature. The Douglas DC-3 was built as a carrier and transport plane and was used to transport people and goods. It had a metal sleek look and was very advanced looking for it's time.
