After a few days, the patient started to have abdominal pain and a high WBC so stool samples were ordered.

After the incubation period, the lab noticed that the agar plates had pink, encapsulated colonies. When bacteria colonies look pink like the picture shown, that means that they fermented lactose, and you can also see that the colonies are encapsulated in mucoid. Then, after they created the Gram Stain and viewed it under the microscope, they found it to be gram negative rods. So that means they found pink bacteria in the shape of bacilli.

The health care team came to the conclusion that it was Klebsiella oxytoca, or K. oxytoca, which is penicillin resistent and which has capsules, that caused her ACHC. This took a long time to come to this conclusion because it is not a common cause of colitis. The health care team did stool samples, blood cultures, and cultures of the wound and all three came back confirming it was K. oxytoca.
