Os feiticeiros do vodu aparecem em histórias nas quais davam a alguma pessoa um veneno não mortal, mas fazendo a pessoa parecer estar morta. A vítima era então enterrada e o feiticeiro retorna, tomando posse sobre o corpo, no qual não obedece a vontade de seu dono. As histórias evoluíram e ao longo do tempo os feiticeiros passaram a reviver os mortos nesses contos.
As fábulas de zumbi passaram por estudos científicos e nos anos 80, o botânico Wade Davis foi ao Haiti, afirmando ter identificado ter duas drogas capazes de entrar na corrente sanguínea e colocar alguém em transe, agindo como um zumbi ou algo que se assemelha.
No folclore haitiano ainda contém histórias de terror onde esses mortos-vivos vivos seriam vistos em ruas de vilas durante a noite. Apesar disso, os mortos-vivos do vodu são diferentes dos zumbis que ficaram famosos na cultura pop contemporânea, e um dos motivos é não comerem carne humana.
