They do this more during periods of terrorism or higher security. Drugs of any kind are taken very seriously and possession of any drug, even in small amounts or if they are a less “hard” drug, can result in a long sentence for possession. Certain religious practices and activities are also banned in Russia. Jehovah’s Witnesses are seen as extremist in Russia and are harassed by officials, mostly in places of worship.

The recent atatcks have happend in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017. These attacks were planned by different groups like Daesh and al-Qaeda, who also continue to make and plan attacks on Russia. Kidnapping is another act that happens alot in Russia. People that do humanitarian aid work, journalism or business sectors are targeted the most for kidnapping and some are killled by the people that capture them. Russian officals don’t like to try and reason or make deals with the kidnappers because they feel it increases the risk of more people being kidnapped. They also don’t like to make deals or talk to the kidnappers because in 2000 The Terrorism Act was passed and it makes payments to terrorists illegal.

Credit/debit cards are mostly used in Russia. Places like hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, supermarkets and other shops accept Credit or Debit card use. It’s usually a good idea to have some cash in roubles to use for any expenses. Taxi drivers are the least likely to let you use card unless you are using an app like Uber, Lyft, Etc where you can use an app. US dollars can be exchanged for rouble, and you can only exchange money at banks, hotels and airport exchange bureaux. It is illegal to change money from street vendors or traders.
