  • The state of Indiana expects students with disabilities to participate in state assessments.
  • A case conference committee determines whether a student with disabilities will participate with or without accommodations in the general education assessment(s) or Indiana’s Alternate Measure (I AM) assessment.
  • I AM is an assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities in third through eighth grade and high school, designed to measure their academic progress and ensure accountability.
  • The I AM assessment is developed with Indiana educators' involvement and measures student achievement based on the state's Alternate Academic Standards or Content Connectors.

  • I AM is divided into two parts and adapts to the student's answers, building the test in stages.
  • In Part One, the students take a placement test to determine their general level of performance. A more targeted test is administered to each student in Part Two based on the Part One results. 
  • In Part Two of the assessment, three different versions are available from low, moderate, and high difficulty:  Form A, B, and C.  The student's placement is determined by their performance in Part One of the assessment. The student's final score is calculated based on their performance in both parts.
  • The assessments are administered online, which includes accommodations for students with multiple accessibility features.

    • The following assessments are administered during the spring school year:
    • I AM English Language Arts          for Grades 3-8 and 10
    • I AM Mathematics for           Grades 3-8 and 10
    • I AM Science for Grades 4, 6, and High School
    • I AM Social Studies for Grade 5

  • The results from the I AM assessments indicate the student's performance on Content Connectors and identify areas requiring more support to achieve learning goals. 
  • Additional resources for I AM, such as Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs), are provided according to grade level and subject area to help determine learning goals and guide instruction.
  • Elementary educators can utilize various assessment tools to gain a comprehensive and detailed view of student learning progress over an extended period.
