INTRODUCTION

For this weeks prompt I decided to look at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Starting with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra ,I read through their history and they seems to be a very prestigious orchestra that have had the opportunity to be under the direction of great composers. This orchestra has been around for a long time, so while looking through the CSO association I noticed that majority of the members were male, as well as looking at the members of the orchestra itself. It was not until the 60s and 70s that women's names were being introduced. However it seems that since its origin the symphony has grown and diversified significantly. This season they will have three world tours, and two domestic tours that highlight the works of composers such as Bernstein, Debussy, Gounod, Rossini, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. These musicians of course are seen in the canon and have composed beautiful, and challenging works. However while looking at past concerts and events I noticed that the symphony performed the soundtrack for each Lord of the Rings movies back in August. I found this to be amazing, considering that I love Howard Shore and literally anything that has to do with Lord of the Rings. It is my favorite movie so I though this was really cool ,and a unique way to integrate newer composers and music. I personally have come to love this orchestra, their conductor, the pieces that they have chosen, and the diversity that they exhibit is very refreshing. I do wish that there was more female composers represented, and I feel that this orchestra could do this and it would work beautifully. Looking at the Cleveland Orchestra it has a very long history as well but what stuck out to me was their mission to continue to serve the community and integrate innovative programming. Looking at their calendar I noticed the usual, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. However I also noticed that they have the youth orchestra play quite a bit , as well as the fact that they play popular movie scores from movies like E.T., and Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas", all while having the movie play on a screen. I found this to be very innovative and an uncommon but wonderful way to have fun. This orchestra also seems to be very unique and diverse just as the Chicago Symphony is. Both orchestras are ones that I would absolutely go watch and support.

"...In popular culture, and especially in music, the pseudo-generic man still rules."

Ann Powers

This quote stuck out to me because I agree, especially within the canon it is predominantly male, and even newer composers for pop culture such as Howard Shore, or Hans Zimmer. These men have been given so much praise and attention. Which in my honest opinion they deserve, however I still feel that women are over looked and underestimated when it comes to pop-culture and music in general.
