8 Ways Your Favorite Songs From Middle School Changed Your Life

For my project, I did a buzzfeed article on some of the most popular songs while we were in middle school and how these songs have affected lives. I feel like my project will be showing how artists can influence society specifically younger teenagers. With it being in a form of a listicle, it will make it easier for people to understand and possibly even relate too. There have been studies done about this before, but I want my project to come off easy to understand. The challenges I came across was making sure I picked songs everyone knew for the relevant time period. If I could do it again, I would do something longer and more in depth.

Breaking Down Genres

I wrote a blog-style paper that is a resource for defining and understanding different genres. I have always struggled with the question “what kind of music do you listen to?” I wanted to break down each genre and describe them in a clear way so that people have an easier time answering that question. I found it difficult to find sources that easily described each genre. It was also challenging to place artists and songs into genres because artists typically use influences from many different styles of music. I'd probably add links to songs if I went back and changed things.

Give Hybrid Genres A Chance!

This project is a blog style post describing and convincing people about checking out bands that combine two different genres together for a new experience. I did this because many people sort of get stuck to 1 specific genre, and hybrid genres are perfect for changing up your daily mix. As far as challenges go, I didn't have any problems with the actual project, but more of buzzfeed flat out deleting my account and previous article because I used youtube videos, so I redid everything in adobe spark. There would not be anything different I would change for the project. One thing to know before grading, is that I have a couple of clickable links to a few website, and I don't want you guys to miss it. Thank you!

What Are Microtones?

For my project I made an animated style YouTube video breaking down what microtones are. I decided to make this video because microtone was my word for the video glossary assignment and as I was working on it I realized how difficult it was to find helpful sources online on the topic, let alone ones that would be easy for someone without any musical knowledge to understand. The main challenge I faced was in learning how to use PowToon, the video creator I used. At first it was difficult to understand its features, so it took a while to create, but once I got the hang of it it was able to do a lot. If I redid the project, I might look into other softwares for making these sorts of videos as it was difficult to use at first and takes a long time just to make a couple minute video.

The Relationship Between Listening to Classical Music and IQ Scores

This project summarizes a meta-analysis on the findings of the relationship between listening to classical music and IQ scores. It breaks down the analysis in a way that makes it easier to understand and grasp. This project was done to help others better comprehend this topic which has been a very controversial subject for many years. People often try to research this topic and find themselves not understanding to the fullest extent what the research's findings are conveying. Some challenges that I have faced during this project was making sure I only wrote about the highlights/ main points of the meta-analysis; there was so much information presented in the analysis that not all of the information presented was important enough to include in my summary in order to get the main finding points across. If I could have done this project again, I would have written an organized outline of all of the findings mentioned in the meta-analysis to better help myself organize my summary and be sure to include only main points throughout the project.
Full Meta-analysis link:
https://www.jstor.org/stable/3333640

This projects analyzes how cultural appropriation in music specifically have existed for many years and is nothin new. I chose this because after taking this class it was clear to me how often the West is guilty of taking from other cultures without any acknowledgement, appreciation, etc. and I found this to be hugely problematic. The only trouble I had was finding the source stating the sitar players were not credited in "Love You To" however I remember talking about it during class. So that in addition to some more research on the beginning of cultural appropriation is something I would like to have been able to do in the future.

I was inspired to gather opinions on cultural appropriation after a discussion with friends where there was no consensus on whether or not is is inherently wrong. I felt it would be beneficial because there is a lot written about cultural appropriation in terms of fashion, but not nearly as many in music. My biggest challenge was getting people to take the poll, but I feel I had a reasonable amount of data to present two different arguments. If I did it again I would try to get more participants and use more examples.

This project is an exploration into the good and the bad Korean pop and hiphop music from the early 2000's to current music. I wanted to do this project because a lot of Korean artists are slowly entering the American market and I'd like people to understand that early Korean music doesn't even justify a quarter of the cinematic and musical talent that current stars have. The only challenge I faced was when I got to the good music portion, there was so much I wanted to talk about and could probably go on for hours about each respective artist. If I could do it again I'd probably focus on the negative aspects of the culture, the eating disorders, how the industry is basically like selling yourself off for 10+ years but still fail to become famous.
https://spark.adobe.com/page/ruXH7WW9YxLXL/
https://spark.adobe.com/page/W5SrG1tdj7inv/
https://spark.adobe.com/page/tMp64mbFXKIYf/

I chose to do this project because I am Filipino-American. I was raised in a Filipino household where everything in the house was Philippine culture. I grew up eating Filipino food, learning the language and traditions and going there every year but the only thing my parents did not teach me was the musical culture in the Philippines. I know the hip hop and pop music but not really familiar with the history of the traditional music. I wanted to do this project because I only knew the basics but I did not know the history of these different types of music and how much the Spanish rule influenced the music as well. The only challenge I faced was I could talk about the Philippines so much, it was hard to condensed into a small article where people would stop reading it. If I could do it again I would change the platform so i could have made the font more interesting, the different colors or backgrounds I couldve used if i chose a different one.

Top 10 Reasons Music Shouldn't be Censored

This project is describing ten reasons music is so important and should not be censored. I chose to do this since I strongly feel that the censorship of music would do more harm than good to our society. Some challenges I encountered was the in between and grey area that yes, music should not be entirely censored but in what ways can only certain things be censored? It was difficult to consider these points since I had to pick a side: should music be censored or should it not be? If I could redo this, I would not have done this top ten list format but instead argue both sides of the debate in an article. Clearly, this topic is highly debatable and I do understand points from both sides but I felt as though the benefits of music strongly outweigh the cons, therefore, I chose that music shouldn't be censored at all. Also, as a side note, I tried using multiple mediums including Buzzfeed and Medium.com but my article was suspended and I was unable to post and I could not find a better solution or platform to post my project so for now it is uploaded as the original Microsoft word document.

I chose to do this project because I wanted to learn more about holograms and their relation to concerts after watching the Hologram Concert in class. One challenge I had was that I published the article on medium.com and it would only be view-able for me and not anyone else. The way I fixed this was by creating another account and reposting the article. Something I wish I had done differently is use a different hosting site. If I do this project again I would try out buzzfeed or adobe spark. This project taught me a lot about the use of holograms in concerts and the history of it as well.

This project is a ranking of the top rappers of the 90's which is when rap began to gain a lot of popularity. I chose to do this project for two reasons. Reason number one being that I am a huge 90's rap fan. The other reason being that most lists are biased, and not truly based off of the facts like my list is. A problem I encountered was finding the net worth in the 90's rather than now for many of the artists. If I were to do the project again I would expand the list to 10 because of the amount of elite rappers there were at the time.

This project highlights the top 6 female falsettos. I chose to do this project because in the music industry, falsettos are typically seen as a male dominated trait. Female falsetto singers are extremely underrated and don't get the attention they deserve. I also was interested in doing this because I felt like every female falsetto I had listened to before had a different dynamic to it and it would be interesting to try and rank them. A challenge that I experienced while doing this project was that there aren't a lot of videos on YouTube that offer a spotlight to female falsettos.

My project is a synopsis/review of my experience at a The Used concert. I wanted to this as my project because they are my favorite band, and information regarding what it is like to see them live in Philadelphia is not readily available on the internet. A challenge i faced while completeing this project was content- while writing, I felt I may not have enough content to write on. If I were to do this again, I'd like to make a video project, and take original footage of the band's performance. As you read, know that this band may not be for everyone, and if grunge rock isn't your thing, that's okay!
Link:
https://medium.com/@tuf43544/the-used-at-the-fillmore-11-10-92bb5e28ec14

Ken Sanderson's Final Project for World Musics and Cultures

I decided to do my project to further elaborate on my video glossary term. The term I had was Hocket and after viewing the feedback, I felt like people were still confused on the term. I made this project to help people better understand the term, so they can find it in the music they listen to. The project had some difficulties because it was hard to find a lot of information on the term, but that's why I did this as my final project, so people now have a place to go to learn about a hocket. when doing the project, I would not have done anything differently. I enjoyed working on it and had fun learning about the term. I hope this post gives anyone who reads it a better understand of what a hocket is and can aid them in finding it in music.

Does appearance influence an artist’s success in the music industry?

I want to write about a “hot topic” in music. The topic I want to focus on is does appearance help influence an artist’s success in the music industry? In other words, does being pretty or handsome elevate a person’s chance of becoming successful in the music career? I think this is an interesting topic and it is a topic I want to learn more about. I've always wonder if appearance plays a role when it comes to success. At first, I had trouble formatting my blog. I wasn't sure what I should include and how to make everything flow. I also had trouble finding the read time for my blog. If I could do this project again, I will probably consider making a video. I think it will be more fun to put together.

Link: https://medium.com/@tug57343/does-appearance-influence-an-artists-success-in-the-music-industry-8fea58998a19

When I search “Top-5 most influential Chinese pop singers”, the answer is totally different from each website. Some of singers are not very popular in China who are in the top-5 list, it is not fair to some other singers who really did horrible contribution to Chinese pop music.

The information about Chinese pop music is not very much. When I google this topic, there are only four websites shows it. I think let people all over the world know more information about Chinese pop music is a meaningful thing to me. China changes so fast; the style of pop songs is always being change in China. I think this is an opportunity for me to do things for Chinese pop music.

The last thing which I think important is none of these four websites presents a clear example. Showing singers’ songs is the best way for people to know Chinese pop music. Thus, doing this project is meaningful and necessary to Chinese pop musical area.

Quiz: What Does Your Music Taste Say About Your Personality

This is an online quiz, revealing people’s musical tastes and personalities based on their choices. Nowadays, many people make wrong decisions about picking their jobs because they can’t figure out what they really like, which cause them to have less motivation to do their future jobs. The reasons causing the situation are that they don’t understand their own personalities and can’t find what they are interested in. Therefore, understanding people’s inner worlds becomes an important thing. More and more research reveals that music preferences can tell people their personalities. Therefore, I want people to get to know some of their personalities by taking this quiz. The challenge I encountered while working on this project was I found that different research may expose slightly different results about personalities based on a same music taste, making it hard to say which one is more accurate. If I could do the project again, I would add more results from other research, which could help people pick the personality that most agrees with them.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/liichenyi/quiz-what-does-your-music-taste-say-about-your-pe-38nmt?utm_term=.dlDkOMp8p#.kj2E9WJZJ

In this blog, I argue against some of the problems with Vocaloid and why Vocaloid has a positive impact on me.

I wanted to write about Vocaloid because, in class, I felt like there was a stigma surrounding this topic. So, I want to defend why I enjoy listening to Vocaloid.

Some of the problems, I encountered was writing the blog. I had an idea of what to write but I had a hard time figuring out how to organize it.

If I could do this again, I would provide a non-bias essay on the different points of view of Vocaloid singers.

I hope you understand my point of view!

I decided to analyze some of the musical elements used in SZA's "CTRL" in this album review. I chose this as my project because I am a huge fan of this rising artist, and she has recently become the most Grammy nominated woman this year so I thought she would be a good choice to talk about since she is getting more popular. I found it challenging to listen to the songs in search of certain elements that we learned about in class, but I ended up finding a lot more examples than I thought. If I were to do this project again I would maybe make a video or a presentation explaining my findings, because I am not the best at writing clearly. I included some of her songs at the end of my article, so I hope some of you take a listen, especially if you haven't heard them yet!
https://medium.com/@tuf90371/album-analysis-ctrl-by-sza-c18f635bc061

My project is about the music that is involved in religions and cultures in India in the form of bhajans. Moreover, I have talked about modernized bhajans that have been created so that the younger generation get involved and give attention to their religions. I belive that the modern music in todays bhajan is very interesting and unique and that is why I chose this topic. What I found challenging was to find examples of the same bhajan with a modernized and an old version. However, the much I could find are good examples that show how different and attractive the new versions are. If I got the chance to do this project again, I would definitely work harder to find other examples as well as find some reviews of the young generation on the modernized bhajans. I hope that you all listen to the examples so you can better understand this project. Ashruti Patel Link: https://medium.com/@tug24005/modernized-bhajans-in-india-1854ba79720e

7 Songs for 7 Moods

1. My project is about the correlation between music and mood, and the best songs that should be listened to dependent upon mood.
2. Although there are other articles out there that cover similar subject matter, the songs I have chosen contain no lyrics, and look at the music itself as a way to indicate mood. I think it is important for people to know the relation between the two, and I thought it would be nice to give them 7 different songs to listen to when they're in different moods.
3. My biggest challenge was finding songs for "Angry" and "Stressed" moods. I had to do some digging to find both of the songs I chose because I could not think of many "angry" lyrical-less songs. Same goes for "stressed".
4. I would probably keep everything the same, including using Medium, because it was very simple to use and I appreciate that it tells you how long it will take to read your article.
5. I would like you to know that while I personally enjoy all the songs I chose to include in this article, that I only chose them based off of their musical features as they relate to certain moods, like dynamics, tempo, and overall feel. I also included 7 other songs to give more options, which also follow the same musical guidelines as the first 7.

My project talks about the why other cultures would use a couple English words in their lyrics instead of having the songs in one language. Also I addressed why the composers prefer English over other languages. I wanted to do this project because Americans do not realize the influence they have on other cultures since they don’t really care about the world around them. Through music, they could learn about how influential and important English could be to music, as well as spark their interest on foreign cultures.
A challenge I encountered while working on the project was the reasoning behind why English was used in general. I found resources of why it was used with certain cultures but the reasoning could have been different for other cultures.
If I were to be able to do this project again, I might have focused on a certain culture and go into further details on how English would affect the musical texture of the song and the impact it would have compared the words in the native language. As you read this, you may not be familiar enough with foreign songs, but it’s alright because we all learn something new everyday. It could also be hard to look up songs that fit this category but it’s there.

Quiz: Empathizer Vs. Systemizer: What Does Your Taste In Music Say About Your Personality?

1) My project is a BuzzFeed quiz that tests what a person’s favorite music says about his/her personality. This is based on a study by Cambridge psychologist David Greenberg about whether a person is an "empathizer" or a "systemizer."
2) I wanted to do this because I am the type of person who takes Buzzfeed quizzes and I love learning about myself.
3) I encountered technical difficulties with the Buzzfeed website so I could not upload the quiz on the official website. Another challenge I faced when I was working on the quiz on Buzzfeed was that Greenberg also said a person could be "balanced" but I could not create this as a result since Buzzfeed did not allow an option where the answers were evenly split.
4) If I could do this differently, I would try finding a different quiz platform than Buzzfeed but I would keep the questions the same and the study that I based my quiz off of too. Trying to solve the technical difficulties took up a lot of my time.
5) I spent almost 2 hours trying to upload my quiz on Buzzfeed, switching between internet platforms, using a PC instead of a MacBook, creating different Buzzfeed accounts, and even having to copy everything I had as an email to myself. The website constantly logged me out and would freeze so that when I refreshed it, all my work would disappear.

Full study here: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0131151

Quiz: 5 Quick Questions to Help You Find your Perfect Samba Song.

1. My Project is a Samba Song Workout Quiz. It may sound very confusing but I swear it is simple. Essentially when I run or do other accessory workouts I NEED good rhythmic music to keep me moving. So when we covered Brazilian Music and Culture in class I immediately thought about how I could run better than ever to these songs.
2.I choose to do a quiz format because when I think about the kinds of music people listen to while they work out two options come to my mind. Either people listen to slower lyrical based music or they jam out to bass and percussion based music. Usually the easiest example I can think of are either Classical music or Hard Rap music.
3.All of the music is phenomenal. The areas in which I struggled the most was narrowing down the Samba schools into the categories of what I was going to use for this project and what to add to my personal playlist. Also when I was searching the archives of the Samba school songs I hit a lot of brick walls. It seems that nobody like to keep these songs around on the internet.
4.I love the idea of taking a quiz to find a specific groups that would make a group of songs I could listen to while I run to motivate me. I think I choose a difficult topic to cover this. Simply because every year there is a general theme that all songs have to fit so finding different songs within the same year singing the same thing was hard. If I had to do something over I would choose two different genres of music from different places.
5. KEEP IN MIND! Samba schools have themes every year and they create their songs accordingly. So if the music may sound similar or they do not fit into the categories I place them try and imagine working out this music. Do not compare it the music you usually listen to harshly and keep in mind that the theme changes every year and the specific year does matter when looking for the particular music. You do not have to specifically workout to these songs. You can do cleaning around the house. You can ride bikes with friends and still listen to this music. It is quality music that I think can be listened to as long as you are busy and would usually listen to music.
And Finally. YOU NEED TO DO MY QUIZ ONLINE. THE SONGS I USED FOR THE QUIZ ARE FOUND IN THE LINKS. DO NOT GOOGLE YOUR SONGS AND CLICK THE FIRST ONE THAT POPS UP. THE LINKS DO NOT WORK ON MOBILE DEVICES.
5 Quick Question To Help Find Your Perfect Samba Workout Song! https://www.buzzfeed.com/lilafinley/5-quick-question-to-help-find-your-perfect-samba-w-38zf8?utm_term=.kmzWgDBBEj

This article gives you a better understanding of what Capoeira is all about and what makes it unique.
2. For my concert review I went to the Brazilian Festival and wanted to learn more about this form of music and dance. It was difficult to find a good source that had all of the information I needed so I decided to make one myself.
3. I found it difficult to condense the information into something that was easy and enjoyable to read.
4. I originally wanted to use BuzzFeed to do this project, but I ran into some technically difficulties. If I were to do this again I would like to use that website rather than Medium.
5.
Brazilian Samba Schools’ Ties to Drug Trafficking

1. My project is an article that describes the influence drug trafficking has on Brazilian samba schools, while also providing a deeper insight into the importance of samba schools to the community.
2. When people think of Brazil, they think of Carnival celebrations, energetic citizens, and maybe even samba, but they are ignorant to the presence of drug lords who have control over many aspects of Brazilian culture. Americans and other cultures of the world need to know what goes on behind the scenes and not just look at Brazil’s celebratory nationalism as a sign that they’re a community without imperfections.
3. It was challenging to find a balance between giving the reader enough background information so they are not confused, but not too much as to bore them .
4. If this were a larger project, one thing I would do differently would be to include a visual multimedia source/video, because seeing Brazilian culture is much more impactful than reading about it.

Musical Texture Lesson Plan

My project is a lesson plan teaching middle schoolers about musical texture. I was driven to do this project because I felt that texture would be an easy concept for middle schoolers to learn if it were presented in an accessible way. Additionally, I looked at some other lesson plans on this subject and there were not very many engaging and thorough ones. While working on this, I found many things to be difficult. First of all, the examples for each type of texture were fairly hard to come by. Beyond that, it took a lot of creativity to think of different ways to explore this material so that different types of learners could engage with it. If I could do the project differently, I would probably want to create more materials to go along with the basic lesson plan that I provided. Additionally, I would prefer that Medium.com worked, because I think that is a more appropriate platform for this project, but unfortunately it wasn't working.
https://spark.adobe.com/page/HFnifTjkqhlaM/

How much does the music we listen to affect our personalities?

My project focused on comparing the stereotypes of the past with those of now, specifically, the relationship between people’s personalities and the type of music they listen to. I wanted to do this project because I personally feel that a lot of people are too quick to judge someone simply based on his or her musical preferences. In terms of challenges, the only significant issue was finding people to fill out my surveys, but I was ultimately successful with obtaining the amount of feedback I originally desired. With that being said, if I were to do things differently, I would probably try to collect more responses as well as give more options for characteristics in the survey. Also, it has come to my understanding that other students in the class did very similar projects to my own. I was completely unaware of this, so I apologize to those students if they feel that their works have been plagiarized.

1. My project is a movie review of Pink Floyd's "The Wall", a movie narrated through a musical album. The review I wrote summarizes how music plays a role in throughout the entirety of the film and enhances it.
2. I wanted to do this project because I am extremely passionate about "The Wall" and take any excuse I can get to analyze and explain it to other people.
3. I didn't encounter any real challenges as I am a huge nerd on the subject and actually had a great amount of fun completing it. My biggest issue was accessing Padlet!
4. If I could do the project again, I would have taken more specific examples of how a song narrates a specific scene but I was cautious about not giving away any spoilers!
5. The only thing that I would like my classmates and instructor to know is that I did not realize another student picked this as their topic. Additionally, if anyone ever wants to talk about The Wall, reach out!

https://medium.com/@madisonreiver/music-narrates-a-film-a-review-of-pink-floyds-the-wall-d2fd404e9048

I wanted to do this project because music in movies always catches my attention. A good soundtrack can either make or break a movie.
3. Some challenges I encountered was picking just 10. Also, trying to find videos from each movie to make sure you would get why I placed each soundtrack where they were.
4. If I could anything again, it would be taking more time to find better examples of videos in the movies and getting better chunks to represent the soundtracks.
5. I really enjoyed doing this project and I have seen every one of these movies in my top 10 and I really suggest watching them and listening to the soundtracks!

As a south indian I want my classmates to know more about south indian music. Also people talked about south indian music more in our language so I want to do in English so my everyone can read and understand it. The main challenges were submitting it in medium.com and figuring out how the padlet works because this is the first time I am using it.

My project is an article that focuses on the art form of DJing. I decided to focus on this topic because I believe a lot of people don't appreciate this art form and skill that requires so much effort and love for music. Some obstacles I encountered was actually staying on point and focusing on the topic at hand and not get side tracked. If I were to do this differently I would make this assignment into a video that actually shows my friend, Skoob DJing and showing the viewers the amount of love and passion he puts into every mixset, even if its just me as his audience. I really enjoyed doing this assignment because I actually got to sit down with my friend and truly understand why he loves this art form so much and just listening to him speak about it, convinced me even more to appreciate this masterpiece.

"The Point of It All" by Ayala // Analysis

1. My project focuses on Ayala High School's 2017 WGI program "The point of it all." Here I discuss how Ayala's framework directly challenges the judging standards of the activity. I also attempt to explain the love and passion that participants have for the activity.
2. I wanted to do this because there is so much to take in from the show, even seeing it live 2 times was not enough to fully comprehend their genius. I also once was in their shoes, I understand the disconnect between the community and performers over the passion involved in the activity.
3. The biggest challenge I faced was trying to take a show that holds so many minute details that even judges missed things, and breaking it down to an audience that likely has no experience with the activity. Aside from that, I also struggled to pick apart all the details myself.
4. I would do Chino Hills show from 2017 because its another fantastic show that a wider audience would be able to comprehend with little understanding of the activity.
5. I love and have participated in this activity, so I am fluent the on goings that occur. I apologize if there is anything lost in translation, but I feel I have it simplified enough. I enjoyed this project, gave me an excuse to watch WGI videos during study time.

Is Art Related to Musical Genres?

If anyone ever has any free time, then I highly recommend they try this out. Just listen to one genre of music, but from several different parts of the world and we can see a different take on it and this sometimes gives us an insight on the kind of country/state/city we are looking into.

There are so many good songs that come out every year.

I might go even more specific in my research to be able to pin down the best of a genre rather that the best of all genres.

I wanted to make the project more creative but had trouble doing complicated things using Adobe Spark. Also, because I did a video, it didn't leave me much space for an explanation of my lengthy analysis.

My project is a short essay on the artist Tupac Shakur. I chose to write about Shakur because he is one of my favorite artist. While writing this project I encountered the challenge of making the article brief but with just enough content to inform readers on Tupac Shakur. If I could write this paper again, I would probably talk about his mysterious death.

QUIZ:Style Preference vs. Music Taste

For my project, I wanted to do a fun personality-style quiz. The fashion industry relies heavily on music artists and popular trends, so it is common to see certain styles of clothing geared toward a group of people. Among millennials, especially, there many different styles that can be associated with the concerts they attend. I hoped to see if I could correlate these common styles with the music genre of the quiz-taker. This took a lot of research of the common clothing articles worn by specific groups of concert-goers (links in the slide show).

Originally, I made this quiz on Buzzfeed. Due to errors with the website and hours of troubleshooting, I had to make the quiz into a powerpoint presentation. When you open the powerpoint, go on "presentation" mode and follow the instructions on the slide.

If I could do anything differently, I would like to research the history of these fashion trends and learn where they stemmed from. Please know that this quiz was not meant to be 100% accurate, but is rather an interesting way to explore different genres of music.
