The first call for the DDA course was truly personal. I felt nervous hearing folks share their experiences around Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. I have mostly read and heard in class about the situation, but never firsthand from someone that had to flee from the country. 

Their experiences, as mine, have been deeply personal. I grew up with stories of hidden authoritarian regimes lectured by my grandmother. However, I realized that my generation and I have never experienced in Mexico anything like what my colleagues shared (at least not openly). 

I kept thinking about and discussing it with my inner circle, as these discussions made me realize how easy is for people to take for granted democratic values, and not see clearly when these values are taken away. 

I consider that youth in my context has slowly but steadily become a major force of change and vocally learning how to fight for freedom when actions by our representatives have threatened our democracy.
