Conception takes place when a man's sperm fertilizes a woman's egg, also known as the ovum. During this time, the sperm's chromosomes become part of the nuclear product in the ovum. This is known as a zygote. A zygote is comprised of 23 pairs of chromosomes, one member of each pair is given from the mother and one from the father. The 23rd pair of chromosomes play an important role in determining the sex of the fetus.

Prenatal development depends roughly on the genome to develop products the body needs to grow properly. It also relies sufficiently on environmental influences, such as nutrition and social interactions. The period of the zygote lasts about two weeks post conception. The period of the embryo, the third to the eighth week, is when the fetus begins to form their organ systems and structures. The ninth week until birth is called the period of the fetus. This is when the reproductive system forms, body weight is gained, and the brain and nervous system develop.

After delivery, a baby's neurons continue to rapidly reproduce. At about 12 months of age the neurons begin to slow down. Another reason why the brain continues to grow after birth is the development of the synapses. Synapses is the rising connections among neurons. In return, a baby will experience dramatic growth in both their auditory and visual cortices between three and four months of age. Through a process called neural pruning, many of these neurons will die off in the chid's next 12 years of life.
