Greatly accelerated by human activities since 1960, deforestation has been negatively affecting natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and the climate.
Trees absorb and store carbon dioxide. If forests are cleared, or even disturbed, they release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Forest loss and damage is the cause of around 10% of global warming. In relation to health, tropospheric ozone and particulate matter (“fine dust”) are the pollutants of greatest concern given that exposure to them can have consequences ranging from mild effects on the respiratory system to allergies or even premature mortality.

Global warming continues to offer alarming data and we have only been three months old. After a 2019 in which the Earth will experience its second hottest year in 140 years, the first months of this year continue that trend, hovering around or exceeding historical monthly records: this January was the warmest on record, February was the second hottest month in history and March was on par with the second and third warmest March on record. The warming of the Earth's atmosphere is reacting to soaring levels of carbon dioxide, responsible for the greenhouse effect, which is now at its highest levels in at least 800,000 years.
