One of Italy’s most interesting traditions is La Befana, celebrated on January 6th, the Epiphany. In Italian folklore, La Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children on the night before the Epiphany, similar to Santa Claus. According to legend, the three Wise Men invited her to join them on their journey to find the Christ child. She declined at first, but later regretted it and set out to find him, bringing gifts along the way. Now, each year, she visits homes, leaving sweets for good children and lumps of coal for those who misbehaved.

Italian families celebrate with sweets shaped like coal, festive decorations, and processions. Particularly popular in central and southern Italy, La Befana is a beloved character who brings a final touch of magic to the holiday season.
