Gatsby's motive was love - he wanted to pick up where they left off five years ago... "He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all again slowly, he could find out what that thing was..."(Fitzgerald 110).

Daisy's motive is money and love, but when Gatsby went away she chose Tom over Gatsby because Tom had money and at that time Gatsby didn't... "They're such beautiful shirts, it makes me sad because I've never seen such---such beautiful shirts before"(Fitzgerald 92). This is where Daisy realizes she should have waited for Gatsby to return, and she should have married Gatsby instead of Tom.
