1. Why would a story like “The Renegade” appeal to John B? Explain thoroughly, using at least 1 piece of evidence from the story.

2. Look up the word “renegade.” What does it mean? What does it mean in the context of the story? Who is the renegade and why? Explain thoroughly, using at least 1 piece of evidence from the story.

3. The story ends with the following line: “Everything was quiet and lovely in the sunlight, the peaceful sky, the gentle line of the hills. Mrs. Walpole closed her eyes, suddenly feeling the harsh hands pulling her down, the sharp points closing in on her throat.” What could this line mean in the context of the story? She does not LITERALLY have a "death collar" around her neck. What is she talking about?

1: In the story, a lot of bad things happen around and it wasn't a good day and it relates to John because he has been struggling with life and it sort of relates to his situation like in the first chapter he says, "And I'm about had enough of Shittown and the things that go on."

2: Renegade means a person who deserts and betrays an organization, country, or set of principles. The renegade is the dog because it is basically causes commotion in the story and stirs problems to the people. In the story it states, "your dog was chasing our chickens. We heard the chickens and he took a stick and and chased the dog away and then he found two more dead ones."

3: The line could mean that from the outside, things may look great, but from the inside she is dealing with great pain thats hurting her mentally and emotionally.

1. the story relates to Johns life because they both kind of have a lot of negativity surrounding it. he always talks about him being dead. they were both very depressed and had to deal with tough situations
2. someone that betrays or deserts an organization or country. the town turned against Mrs. Walpole her and she's trying to escape it.

3. she feels a lot of anxiety and pressure from the people around her. the neighbors were talking about torturing her dog and laughing about. “And you fasten it to the collar and then we put the col lar on Lady,” Jack said. Lady was sitting next to him and he leaned over and said, “Then we put this real sharp spiky collar around your neck," and kissed the top of her head while Lady regarded him affectionately"

1. Mrs. Walpole and John B are very similar character wise. John B started to become depressed while in a town he didn't like and there was always some bad things happening. While Mrs. W didn't really care for the country and now she has a big decision she has to make, "When Mrs. Walpole's glance fell on Lady's water dish under the sink, and she realized that she was indescribably depressed..."

2."having treacherously changed allegiance." The renegade would be the kids, they found it amusing the horrible plans they have for the dog. They laughed at Mr. Shepard's plan.

3. Mrs. Walpole felt like all the stress she had going on was causing her to feel like she was suffocating in her troubles.
