The Walking Character

The Walking character is a traditional style, 2D animation which includes hand drawn main character and a moving background created using Adobe Animate, Adobe Photoshop. Originally, traditional animation was done by drawing every frame manually on a paper. However, the technology has eased those old methods with development of modern applications.

This digital hand drawn animation was done by choosing and drawing a character, then drawing the movements of character for reference points and combining these to create a loop where the character can have continuous walking movement. Walk cycle is an interesting part of character animation to create because in addition to the apparent movement of the legs, a realistic walk cycle requires a lot of other features such as body torsion, arm and head movement, animation timing. The walk cycle can be broken down into key frames and character poses are drawn according to the key frames. The frames can be looped using the movement references so that animating every step again and again is not necessary.

I chose this form of animation for my artefact because hand drawn animation is one of the oldest forms of animation and cartoon inspired 2D animations are the best to bring out the imaginations in the form of visual and the movement in the animation gives life to the characters.

I was inspired by animator Aaron Long and his animations for my style of animation. Some of his popular animations are Sublo & Tangy Mustard, Tuca & Bertie. My other inspirations for my animation work are Chuck Jones who is well known for his creations in Warner Bros. My primary inspiration from all these artists and their animations is creating a fictional, non-human character and giving the character with unique, cartoony features and movements.

MetaBall

My second artefact is a moving liquid Metaball which is created using Touch designer. This software provided me with a platform to apply interesting methods and techniques to achieve art or object with desired features. I structured and controlled the Metaball using shapes, various operators, lighting, and movement. The software includes a wide range of tools that enables visual manipulation from colour editing to data visualization, focusing on geometry nodes to create intricate generative artworks.

The main inspiration I got for creating this artefact is from a creator “Acrylicode” who creates their arts on different platforms. Their website and YouTube content have amazing artwork and tutorials for learners which is informative and inspiring. I got inspired from their creation and learnt few additional techniques of creating art using Touch Designer. I used those techniques to explore several programmes and interfaces used in that software which was very helpful for creating the moving object.

I used Touch designer mainly to add the 3D effect and movement to the object. My inspiration to create a three-dimensional figure is Ed Catmull, the animator who created a 3D model of an animated hand, popularly known as “A computer animated hand -1972”. The animation was only a small component to 3D animation which helped computer animation to take over and become a significant part of the modern art and film industry by introducing 3D computer graphics.

The aesthetic I used for my artefact is liquid abstract shape aesthetic, which is a modern art. I used this aesthetic to create my artefact, with additional gradient colour effect and subtle movement for the animation effect. It was interesting to make this animation because of the fluid-like shape of the object.

Animated Introductory Text

For my third artefact, I used After Effects to animate a piece of text. I created a text logo “CREATE AND LEARN” using Photoshop to use as a fundamental to this animation. I added a Touch Designer background with moving lines to this animation. In order to achieve the particle effect with the text, I used Trap Code particular plugin in After Effects.

I chose to make this introductory animation because a video introduction is the key part of a video, and it is the first thing a viewer will see as the video starts. It is a fantastic approach to catch attention from the viewers and get a positive impression by having an impressive introduction. A good, animated introduction is a best way to start a video that will give a chance to make a great first impression. Large production companies such as Universal, 20th Century Fox have always demonstrated their extraordinary introduction prior to the main movie.

The aesthetic I used for this artefact is Particle effect aesthetic. It is a process used to produce complex animated effects using a large number of automatically animated elements. Particle effect in text animation is widely used by small creators as well as large movie industries and various content creators to enhance their creations. Particles are groups of tiny images that, when combined, create a more complicated "fuzzy" object that look like dust, sand, fireworks or smoke.

Jorge R. Canedo E. is a Vancouver-based animator & creative director. His style of line and geometry art and constructions served as the basis for my Touch Designer backdrop animation for the artefact.

Geometric Art

This artefact is a demonstration of a geometric art in a form of animation. I used Touch Designer to create this animation. With the help of Touch Designer, new UI/UX design, music visualisation is made possible by combining characteristics of a straightforward graphic editor with some experimental and immersive methods. With Touch Designer, I not only developed my artefact, but also learned practical designing abilities, which are currently essential in the design industry.

My decision to create a geometric artwork was influenced by the long history of geometry and its integration into art and architecture over the ages. I wanted to add unique colours and structure to create patterns.

John Whitney's Permutations Art was a major source of inspiration for this animation. John Hales Whitney was an American animator and is also regarded as one of the founding fathers of computer animation. Permutations is an experimental short film by John Whitney Sr. which combines animated shapes in different patterns and colours. Victor Vasarely was another inspiration for me. He was a French-Hungarian artist and is recognised as the founder and leader of the Op Art movement. As shown in his piece Vega-Nor, the artist produced captivating illusions of spatial depth using geometric shapes and vibrant images (1969).

A YouTube creator named “Acrylicode” that teaches the fundamentals of the application has been my main source of information as I navigate Touch Designer. The creator covers all the fundamentals, including layout, approaches, tools, and teach how the programme operates. The format is accessible to all sorts of people including the non-tech/design people.
