For a death penalty just for 5 executions it cost 186 million dollars!! They have over 2,705 people on death row in the USA. That cost a lot of money for the government and tax payers a lot of money. Also without the death penalty cost is 740,000 and cases where the death penalty cost 1.26 million dollars. It cost more to put someone on death row than to incarcerate then for life. This is why the death penalty should be abolished in all countries.

Personally, I think that its is crueler to make criminals wait knowing that they are to face death in 15 years or more. I also think that it doesn't give any closure to families when they know that the person that did them wrong is waiting in jail, while millions is spent to keep them there.

i agree with Grace because most people that know they are going to jail for life usually want to kill themselves so for you to kill them makes them happy because they will not have to be in jail for the rest of there life if you kill them.

I disagree because criminals should know the consequences of their actions before they commit crimes. I feel that it does give closure to families because they know that the criminal has been fully punished for what they did. People are able to recover from their loss because they know that the criminal can no longer harm anyone else after they are dead.

i disagree with you Faith because most of the time they will be put on death row but it will take forever for it to really happen so the family will not know when they will get killed. in California which has the largest death row in the country has spent over 4 billion on death penalty since 1978 while just 13 executions have occurred

I disagree with your point because 1 in 25 people on death row are innocent. Only 144 people were exonerated out of the 8 127 people sentenced to death row since 1976. That is only 1% of people I think that many more have been executed when they were not actually guilty. I feel that people can't fully recover because the wait to be executed is nearly 15 years. Also the victims family pay taxes that go towards paying for the imprisonment of the guilty.

I feel that it is cruel to make criminals live out the rest of their lives in jail. Many criminals would rather be put to death than have to live their life locked up in a jail cell. As you stated, Rachel, prisoners on death row often have to wait a long time for their scheduled date of death to arrive, but at least they are being punished for their actions.

Many people are not even executed because the wait is so long. Several people have died of old age, heart attacks and strokes before they are executed. Not only does it take a long time for the guilty to be put to death it costs around $90 000 more than the average prisoner, ($60 000) which works out to around $150 000. It is not only the costs for imprisonment it is the costs for the execution. The most common lethal injection drug, Nembutal, cost $1 286 for one execution in 2012.

it does not deter criminals there is no evidence that the death penalty deters crime more effectively than prison term. evidence reveals the opposite. since abolishing the death penalty in 1976 Canada murder rate has steadily declined.
