Professionalism Discussion Report - Years 3 and 4

Teachers/supervisors/health professionals in Year 3 and 4 can write a Professionalism Discussion Report using the RiSR (formerly Kaizen) online system (for those with a login, same as WBA assessors) or by contacting your Clinical Education Lead (for those without a RiSR login).

The Professionalism Discussion Process in the MD Program uses a developmental approach to professional behaviour - i.e. that it is learned, can be taught, and will be acquired over time through observing positive role models and with conversations from more experienced educators to draw attention to lapses in professional behaviours. In this sense, the CONVERSATION is most important in assisting the student to develop professional behaviours. The Professionalism Discussion Report is to document that a conversation has occurred, and capture agreed outcomes. On rare occasions, it has been observed that students may not address their behaviour and may in fact be receiving multiple professionalism development conversations from multiple educators - having a form to document previous conversations assists with recognising when a pattern of behaviour exists and professional development is not occuring. The form should therefore be filled out to document any professionalism conversation. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to note that the 'form' is not a 'punishment', like giving someone a speeding fine to deter them from speeding when driving. The development of professionalism is best facilitated by exploring the situation, the behaviours observed, and why these are not acceptable in the context of medical practice. It is also of vital importance in taking time to explore the student's context - as professional behavioural issues often arise when a student is experiencing challenges in their learning or personal environment. We all face such challenges, however learning to manage with them is part of developing as a doctor.
