Strategies could you use to ensure accurate information reaches audiences before disinformation?
Depending on the type of information you want to counter the best way is to provide information by world of mouth in person. For instance using expert in that area e.g nurses for health. This helps to prepare people.
Use of community leaders, like people community can trust such as headmasters and village leaders.
Disseminating information in form of stories. Stories stick in people's minds longer than statistics.
Avoid using jargon when talking about the issue. Rather use local language which is very simple.
WHO has this automated WhatsApp which generate messages on Covid 19.
Toll free lines. Data might be expensive and using toll free lines in some parts of areas like Zimbabwe might be a better strategies.
Radio is the medium of Africa if budget allows the radio can be a good way to inform people.
Partnering with the government, donors, NGOs and speaking with one voice is another strategy. Avoid too many voices speak as one.

This will bring everybody to the same picture of details and will mitigate the spread of disinformation before it even happens.

If the disinformation started to spread, fast-checking is very critical to reach into the bottom of the issue which make it possible to proceed with proper verification process. Then I would proceed with the creation of a few simple and clear statement messages, infographics and videos (possibly with specialists) that would captivate those audiences and can be later elaborated on. It is also possible to take advantage of the relationships with journalists and present the topic to them so that they can share through the media. Turning to influential stakeholders is also important.

- Media monitoring and active listening on social media will be key to picking up trending concerns, trending speculation or trending events that could create opportunities for disinformation to spread

- By establishing this pulse, you can begin drafting messages that emphasise key points you need to make because you anticipate the risk of disinformation, and because independent of that risk, you need to insert your voice into the discourse and establish your narrative. Narratives must be established before disinformation crops up, so that there is consistency and credibility in your messaging IF you need to use it to debunk disinformation.

- Identify the right distribution channels for these messages, based on where your active listening has picked up certain trends. If mainstream media talk shows are focusing attention on the subject, with hosts or callers or guests making certain comments or asking certain questions, offer your spokespersons to mainstream media. If social media is where the need for information is highest because of speculation or information vacuums, create a social media campaign and use influencers and micro influencers to get this messaging out there. Partner with government, law enforcement, civil society or other stakeholders who have similar concerns or similar messaging, to amplify credibility.

When in crisis, the UNCT has to form a crisis management cell formed of most HoAs of various agencies operating the country to begin work. For communications, we should develop a crisis comms strategy under which we will have a set of key messages for all UNCT members to use whenever they encounter a media intervention or whenever contacted. It is also imperative to be working hand in hand with external partners, including government entities and relevant NGOs and for that we can form an external comms taskforce to create joint visibility material about the particular topic and debunk any misinformation/fake news. Under the strategy we can also have communication campaigns for the relevant topic and continuously share visuals and infographics with scientific facts and accurate information on UN and external partners' social media platforms. One of the campaigns can be on dodging fake news and pausing before sharing news. We can make use of our influencers to amplify the messages to their followers. Drafting an Op-Ed on the topic.

Keeping an eye on them, - media monitoring in our practice- we are able to predict if or how this potential hazard would challenge our organization. This also helps to monitor their strategies and predicted their potential threats. As you’re already aware Joe, we have a strongly rising anti-migrant sentiment in Türkiye. Also unlike previous years we now have a new party, setting all its existence on anti migrant policies. It will probably be worse during the election climate since both opposition and the ruling government has some card to play on migration in the very near future.

While I hate to cite Steve Bannon, his "firehose" approach to peddling misinformation is very appropriate as a counter strategy. Matching that with the goal of the UN Global Communications Strategy -- being the authoritative voice -- the key is to flood the space with credible information from the outset, rather than simply to counter misinformation after it starts to flow. This enables us to frame the narrative. The point is not to be seen to be responding to misinformation, but to drown it out. To assist this, we can work with influencers and networks to amplify our content. In addition, we need to be constantly alert to emerging misinformation trends, through clear monitoring processes, and ensure that analytics are fed smoothly to those crafting key messages.
