Always remember that emotions come and go. When your in a tough situation recognize your feelings and try to understand them and eventually when your ready accept them. When you can understand your emotional self you can build resilience and accept what we can't change and focus on the things you can change

Aguilar provided a statistic from the research of Bradberry and Greaves (2009): "90% of top performers were high in emotional intelligence -- in all fields, at every level, and in every region of the world" (p. 52). This statistic solidified Aguilar's point that emotional intelligence and professional success are strongly connected. You have to have emotional intelligence in order to build emotional resilience, which gives you the strength and energy to face difficult situations and ultimately fulfill your purpose as an educator. It makes sense, but I had never broken it down like that before.

I graduated with a degree in elementary education eight years ago. We did not have a course on cultivating emotional resilience in educators or any relevant coursework to that. I wish we would have. Perhaps undergraduate education programs are cultivating emotional resilience in future educators now. Is there more of a need to do so now than there was ten years ago?

How do you draw the line on when your compassion is taking too much from you, on when you have entered compassion fatigue, as the author suggests? I know we need to be our best selves if we are to be effective in helping kids, but I also know that in the moment, stopping and saying that's enough, I need to focus on me now, is really hard to do. If it's really about the kids, then who is that student, that staff member I lead, that I say, "No, I can't help them now. I need to focus on me?" I think it's much easier in concept than it is in practice.
