In late 1941, the united states government established a secret project and coined it the Manhattan Project. This top secret project was set up to beat the axis power to the most destructive bomb in the world at the time. This project employed 120,000 people. When the bomb was tested in New Mexico it created a crater a half-mile wide that turned sand into glass. Almost immediately after that a cover story was sent out to calm the American population. This is what started the very deadly and very real nuclear age.

Women's fashion reflected the style of utility clothes. The clothes were designed with broad shoulders, small waists, and the skirts ended above the knees. This was bold and way different than women had ever dressed before. Men during this time were known for their big suits, big pants, and big colors; throughout all class levels, they dressed similarly. Fedoras, straw hats, and two tone shoes were popular.

During the 1940's the unemployment rate dropped an unbelievable amount due to the American involvement in the second world war. The unemployment rate dropped 10% because the government established wartime manufacturing facilities. This in turn made unemployment rates extremely low. Some of the major shortages during this time of war was the gasoline, steel, rubber, coffee, oil, butter, and meet. The 1940 top federal tax rate and the capital gains tax rate were both higher than the historical average. Top Federal Tax Rate: 81.1%, Capital Gains Tax Rate: 30%. The historical average for federal was 63% and the capital gains rate was 25%. Overall the economy was very well even tough these numbers are high later in the 1940's people started spending loads of money because most families had more than just the male working do the families had more money which lead to the postwar boom!

-McCarthyism
-This was an ongoing scandal during "The Red Scare" era (1940's-1950's) where a Wisconsin senator, Joseph McCarthy, was known for blaming high political and famous figures of being communist. Communism was a big problem in the world at this time and the US' main goal was to stop the spread of communism. McCarthy was only doing this for fame and popularity, but was ultimately shunned by everyone in the US for causing this big problem.
