We watched a movie that brough the book, Friedrich, to life. It showed how people were swept up by Nazis though the Nazi Youth. It also showed resistance in the for of swing dancing. The main character, Peter, also has to grapple with what is right and wrong in a world where morals are skewed by propaganda and fear.

Robert "Bob" Pringle Testimony: Warning, audio describes a genocide and murder.

Bob Pringle was in the 42nd Division Infantry, the Rainbow Division. Bob's older brother was a pilot who went to fight early on in the US's participation in WWII. He was shot down over Italy and killed. Bob was then sent overseas as well, as an infantry soldier. His regiment was a combat unit that fought for months across Europe until one day in April, 1945, they came into a town called Dachau. This was a life changing event for him as he was met with unimaginable horrors when they liberated the concentration camp. Once he returned to the US he went to college and went on to be a successful person working for the telephone company. He did not talk much about the war until many years later. As people began to talk about Holocaust denial, Bob got ANGRY. He began to tell the stories about Dachau in order to bear witness. He went out to speak to any groups that would hear his story because he knew that if people forgot or disbelieved the horrors, they were more likely to happen again. He lived into his mid-80s, and even when he was ill and needed oxygen and a wheel chair, he'd don his uniform to go tell his story. He made this recording on New Year's Eve 1999. He had a cold and therefore sniffles in the recording. He also did not want to be interviewed, but too my questions and went into another room to tell the stories here. For the record, I did not ask the question "What does death smell like," as that's not something I would have thought to ask. What I did was remind him to include that part of the story as he always used to include it when he told me his stories and I did not want him to forget that part. In class we listened to the first story about seeing the trains outside the gates of Dachau - it is about 10 minutes long. There are more stories about what happened following the war that we did not listen to in class.
