If Meursault had mourned his mother’s death, and not smoked or drank coffee in front of her casket, he would have been looked at differently by the people in the court. He is morally ambiguous because sometimes he rarely shows a side of him that knows what is right or wrong. He doesn’t show his emotions or how he feels. When his mother died, he had the option to not drink or smoke, or do it. I feel like he almost decided not to but he did anyway. If he didn't drink coffee or smoke cigarettes during his mom's funeral, maybe the jury and judge would have had more respect for him. Also, if he didn't get into a religious debate with the magistrate, his outcome may have been different. Finally, if he showed any remorse for shooting the man, maybe the jury would have felt bad for him or understood him. Some social norms that would have helped Meursault are; emotion when his mom died, mourning instead of going out and hooking up, and not shooting someone after they are dead 5 times and feel some remorse. Meursuralt is punished for his honestly by the court and given the death penalty. This could have been avoided if he simply lied about believing in god or saying that his mothers death affected him, causing him to act out of character. This says alot about our justice system in the fact that dishonesty and lying will get you a lesser sentence or better conditions.

Meursault could’ve followed the social norms of mourning for his mother the day of and the day after instead of going out and going to the beach in public. The expectations of this are fair but maybe that was his way of coping with the death. This compared to the case of the murder it should not be meaningful but it was used to show his character.

Meursault learns to find interest and to occupy himself with little things. For example, he also sits in his cell and stares outside at the sky. After doing it for a long time he knows what time it is by the look of it. Using this, he stays awake all night and then once it gets past the time where they would take him for his death, he falls asleep (all day). He also pays attention to little details in the wood or on the walls and memorizes them.

Both systems do not reward honesty and the name of the game to minimize your sentence or clear your name is to lie, and let the judges, jury and lawyer hear what they want to hear.

The final line in the book is, “I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate”. This line represents the fact that Meursault is finally accepting his outsider status, and that he is different from others. The pleasure and disquietude experienced by the readers of the Stranger is that it is very biased and you're only seeing the feelings and thoughts of the main character. It is hard to sympathize with him because he did commit a heinous crime

Jail deprived him of everything relatively important to him which was, cigarettes and women, specifically Marie. Based on what I've witnessed and heard prison is built to break prisoners down however Meursault seems to be nearly unaffected, almost as if he's accepted it. “I said I had been looking at the stones in these walls for months. There wasn't anything or anyone in the world I knew better.” (Camus 119). Meursault has accepted what is supposed to be destroying him.

If Meursault was a little more normal he wouldn't be running into these issues. For example, if he didn't shoot the Arab 5 times, or showing no remorse for any type of case. It is normal to maybe shed a tear at a person's funeral, especially your mothers.
